The Dairy Barn is located in beautiful downtown Dickinson, North Dakota, where I have been spending the holidays with my wife's family. Her Dad took me there on my first day in town and I had to go back again before I left, just to get another one of their delicious "Barbecue" sandwiches. I use quotation marks because I live in Texas, home of the best BBQ on the planet, and what the Dairy Barn calls "barbecue" is more like Sloppy Joes, but whatever you call it, it's delicious.
Located in what was once a Dairy Queen, the Dairy Barn offers a similar mix of fast food and ice cream treats, but with a difference. Namely, everything at the DB tastes better (and fresher) than at DQ. Their burgers, chicken, and fries are a cut about their "Brazier" counterparts, using local beef and homestyle recipes, while the aforementioned Barbecue Sandwich rules over DQ's version. Whereas DQ has the Blizzard, DB has the Tornado: same basic concept, but with better soft serve. The Moo-Moo Bar, the Holstein Sandwich, and the chocolate and butterscotch Bessie Bar may be variations on well-known DQ products, but again, they're just that much better.
The Dairy Barn also serves a nice breakfast from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m., and offers live music on Tuesday, featuring Clem and John Clemenski, the Smiling Dutchmen, among others.
