Intro
For years we have hated our cable company, yet other choices didn't exist for us. Of course, the cable company knew it, and used it to their advantage with outrageous fees and a terrible service. We talked about making a switch to a satellite dish for a few years, and once we finally made the decision, we never looked back.

The Programming Choices
With DirecTV, we have the same types of choices of packages of channels that we had with cable TV. Basic, the average "most popular" package, and the package with everything including the kicthen sink. There is also a choice of premium channels, just as there is with cable TV. You can get paid sports programs, movie channels, Pay-Per-View, etc. We chose one movie package, whereas with cable we used to have two, but knew we didn't need two. They also have an NFL football package that allows you to get every NFL game, not just the local ones or the ones featured on the networks. That was a huge selling point for my husband, as he tailgates with his buddies in our garage every Sunday.

The Set-Up

It really wasn't that much. The DirecTV satellite dish isn't that big, and it was installed, plus the wiring throughout my house within less than an hour. The installer gave me a quick review on how to get started with the programming choices and remotes as well. We had it installed in three places, our living room, den, and garage (for those football games!).

Customer Service
I'd love to tell you how great the customer service at DirecTV is, but the fact is, I haven't had to use them. I've never had a problem. While many people warn against satellite TV, saying that it goes out a lot during bad weather, it's honestly only happened a handful of times in the past two years. My cable TV went out more often and for longer. While the satellite may be out for a half hour or so, the cable would sometimes be out for hours.

The All Important Factor: The Price

I find the price of DirecTV comparable to cable TV, but of course different comparisons are going to exist for different services in different areas. But, for the "most popular" cable TV package, along with two movie channel packages, we were paying just under $100 monthly. For the "most popular" satellite TV package, along with one movie channel package, and the TIVO DVR monthly service, we pay just under $80 a month. I'd much rather have TIVO than the other movie package, and I'm paying  $20 less a month! The football package that my husband enjoys  is a flat fee and billed separately, but approximately $250.

I will take DirectTV over Comcast anyday. I lost reception only a couple times & not for any length of time. Compared to Comcast. I live at the Jersey Shore we get some good strong winds but no problem. I've got the package deal TV, internet, & all local & long distance calls for a little over $100 (that includes 4 TV's). When my contract was up they tried to raise the price $40. I told them to disc. They called back & gave me the same package for another year. You can't beat that.

I too have had cable and directv. Cable seemed to go out with almost every storm. We've had satelite for almost 5 yrs and it has gone out about 5 x's. Four of those times it was because there was heavy wet snow on the dish.after we removed the snow it came back on. We too spend about 80.00 a month and we'll never go back. As to the call center, they are very difficult to understand them since they seem to be foreign. We called once about a problem with our bill and the guy on the other end kept telling us there was nothing wrong with our service! He hung up on us because he wasn't getting his point across to us.

Be VERY glad you've never had to deal with their customer service department. I've never dealt with more incompetent people!
