We used to subscribe to cable and then switched to DirecTV. We started receiving more channels, including the ones we normally watch not just useless channels that don't interest us, and at a lower price. It is true that they charge an extra $5 per additional TV to hook up, but even with the surcharge our rate decreased from cable. We paid almost $60/mo for cable and about $50 for directv on three TVs whereas with cable we only had it on one set.
The stories about losing reception in bad weather are overblown. We live in the northeast and only occasionally lose reception in bad weather and it needs to be fairly severe. The worst is with wet, heavy snow. But a simple "brooming" of the dish fixes that problem.
My only complaint is with the time slot coverage of our local hockey team. They seem to allocate a specific amount of time for a game and if it doesn't complete within that time frame, you may lose the end of the game or the post-game show. This is because our team is shown on an "alternate" channel of a another team so it does not have dedicated programming. There are no problems with any nationally televised games such as on NBC, ESPN, Fox, etc. This is specific to this one issue.
Overall, I'd recommend the service without hesitation.
