We moved into our new home 5 years ago. The house was built cable ready. The local cable company only had to hook up their equipment in order to provide service to us. We chose not to use local cable service and to go with DirectTV. Their installer came, hooked up the system and left. Their channel lineup was good and we were happy with the service. We went with AT&T for home telephone and DSL for internet. I have never been happy with AT&T - I think they are a rip off - but that's for another review. Fast forward to this month. Just like most other folks we have been reviewing our income and outgo and decided to make some changes. The local cable company was offering high speed internet and telephone service for about the same cost as AT&T but with higher speed and no long distance charges. We decided to go with it and to keep DirectTV because we were basically happy with the service. The cable company sent someone to hook up the system and found that they could not do so because when DirectTV installed our system, in order to do it faster, they cut the cables in order to splice into the system installed in the house, thus making the cable system unusable. The cable company suggested we call DirectTV to come out and repair what they damaged. The cable company stated that they could not send their installer into the attic to do the job and we would have to get an electrician to repair what Direct TV did. I called DirectTV. The DirectTV representative I spoke with was polite but not helpful. I asked to speak to her supervisor and he was similarly, polite but non-responsive to my needs as a customer. His response was that even if the company did cut the wires, it was 5 years ago and he didn't feel they should repair it. The cable company's installer was in the neighborhood and we approached him as to how to go about getting this repaired so we could have cable service as well as the internet access installed. He said to order the services and ask for him - he knew how to repair it and he would do it for us. So, we switched to local cable service for TV and for high speed internet. The installation was flawless, the installer went above and beyond to help us. We decided we didn't really need local phone service because we both have cell phones. All in all we saved money, are happy with the cable service. We would still have DirectTV if they had been more customer focused.
