DC Comics has a lot characters in its library and WizKids knows this. While developing its HeroClix game, WizKids knew it couldn't include every single character in its lineup. Certain favourites were left out but it helped fuel the anticipation that the next HeroClix set will include them. Then, of course, there are the pleasant surprises that come with the territory. DC HeroClix: Unleashed is the second expansion set (third set in the overall collection) that WizKids hoped to really entice the fans, and they did so in a huge way.
Batgirl (the most recognizable Barbara Gordon version), Supergirl (Kara Zor-El from the planet Krypton and Superman's cousin), more JLA members (Rocket Red, Hawkgirl, Big Barda, and Maxima), and the ultimate Green Lantern Hal Jordan are some of the long-awaited, fan favourite characters that many have been anticipating
Then there was the inclusion of four new powers--Earthbound, Quake, Combat Reflexes, and Exploit Weakness--and two new team abilities--Suicide Squad and Kingdom Come--that really adds more interest to the game play.
There is always a version of Superman and Batman included in every set and this one does not disappoint at all. The Kingdom Come versions of these characters, as well as the inclusion of Wonder Woman, Magog, and a special oversized Bat Sentry from Mark Waid and Alex Ross' amazing tale, is most likely one of the main reasons why Unleashed was such a highly anticipated set. These characters are some of the most powerful game pieces ever to grace the game. Kingdom Come Superman, in particular, is a beast in any game situation.
The entire set consists of 97 figures. That's 97 figures, not characters; there is a difference. There are 23 characters, each coming in three versions--Rookie, Experienced and Veteran. Then there are 13 characters that are deemed "Unique". These are the prized game pieces, some of whom are extremely powerful and some that are a novelty item.
Every booster pack consists of four, randomly inserted pieces so it's not as easy to get a complete collection. Each booster pack costs anywhere between $7-$10, depending on where your purchases are made. For the most part, the secondary market and a lot of trading between other players help round up the missing pieces.
For the most part, DC HeroClix: Unleashed is a great set. There are a lot of interesting characters that come into play. Some are a bit weak and some are extremely powerful. The coveted Kingdom Come Superman is still a magnificent game piece after all these years and still holds up very well in any game situation. But as any collector will indicate, the thrill comes from obtaining a complete collection.
