I've had a D-Link DI-624 wireless router in operation in my home for about three years and it has been quite reliable. Any computer with a wireless adapter can connect to it, provided I install the password for access.

What It Is

The D-Link DI-624 is a small wireless router that connects to my Verizon DSL modem. In turn, I connect a hard-wire Ethernet cable from one of the four Ethernet ports on the DI-624 to my main computer, which happens to be the computer on which I'm typing at this moment. The DI-624 then has wireless connectivity throughout my small home and it provides a strong signal anywhere in my home. I have two other computers that I regularly connect to the DI-624 wirelessly, and sometimes a guest will bring a computer that also connects with no problem -- as long as I supply the password.

The DI-624 can connect at speeds up to 54 Mbps, which is MUCH faster than my DSL service. In reality, that speed is theoretical and probably only available if the networked device is within a couple feet of the DI-624. The fact is that I can easily get the maximum speed of my DSL service to the two computers that are about 20 feet away and through a couple of walls. That's fine for my needs.

How Does It Work?

Setting up the DI-624 was a bit tricky. The initial unit I brought home failed in a day or two, but the store replaced it with no problem. The second unit needed to have the latest version of its firmware installed, as well as passwords saved and several settings (such as the firewall) enabled. I had to call D-Link for assistance, which was helpful and reasonably prompt. Once the unit was finally configured, it has been rock stable -- even through many power failures and long-term outages. Today, I can plug any of my computers into the DI-624's Ethernet ports or connect wirelessly and the unit works fine, no questions asked and no hassles given.

The bottom line is that the D-Link DI-624 has been a paragon of reliability for me, and that's something I value.

Summary

Once past the initial configuration stage, the D-Link DI-624 has been absolutely trouble free and does exactly what it is supposed to do with no fuss at all. That's something I can recommend.
