I grew up with a set of Cutco in the house and wanted a set when I got married. I got a set, and my friends all got other various brands. Mine are still as sharp as the day I got them, seven years later, and all my friends have had to buy at least one new set since.
I liked the "sales pitch" because they taught me how to use the knives like a chef. I also like the fact that you can get them sharpened, even the serrated ones, if you need to. It really impressed me that the knives haven't changed since the 70's, when my mother bought her set. They still look and feel the same. The blades are carbonized steel, so it's like cutting with a diamond.
When I bought my set, my parents sent thier knives in to get them sharpened and polished. They were able to send in the entire set for a flat fee of $5, it didn't matter how many knives they sent in. When they came back, they were beautiful.
