Cutco Knives —

First, I want to tell you how I got introduced to the Cutco knives.  A friend of mine, who was working for Vector marketing gave her superiors my name as someone who might be interested in working for Vector Marketing.  The thing about the suggestion is that if I joined, she got a "bonus" so it proves that everything happens for a reason.  Now while I will be reviewing the company for the majority of this review, I will show you how the demonstrations hook you into buying the knives and i will show you what I've found with response to the knives.  So I go into the interview thinking "wow, $13 an hour is GREAT" as they told me that's what I would start out making.  This company preys on college-age students with the claims to "$13 an hour" or "work whenever you want to, You create your own schedule."  In reality, Vector only paid you $13 an hour if you were unsuccessful in your demonstration to get someone to buy the set of knives.  And that DOES NOT include the time, gas, or money the employee spends getting to and from the place of the demonstration (usually a person's home).  Vector does not offer insurance on their employees so for all we know, a stay-at-home-mom could go psycho, take a demo knife, and murder the employee if they wanted to and Vector would not be held responsible.  NOW FOR THE KNIVES.  I will say the group interview where the "boss" did his demonstration was a little odd.  Sure, the way the blades of the knives are designed, no matter how much the tips on the serrated edges wear away, the knives will stay relatively sharp because of the edges being up in the groove.  BUT, the handles aren't as dishwasher safe as the "boss" and/or "employee" may realize and convey.  The "Forever Guarantee" isn't all it's cracked up to be either.  If you have a dull or broken knife, YOU have to pay outrageous shipping sharges to send it to the shop in New York.  With the rise in gas prices here in 2008, I'm sure those "outrageous" shipping charges that I speak of from 2006 have gotten even more outrageous.  There is a lot more hidden tricks to the Forever Guarantee.  Don't you think if Cutco Aka Vector Marketing REALLY stood behind their products, they would actually TEST their "dishwasher safe" knives and pay for the crazy shipping prices?  Afterall, you do pay a hefty price for them.  Since I can't actually paste url's to websites that were formed against Vector Marketing and Cutco, do your own research. There are organizations of college students that have formed against the works of this company.  Why pay so much for a set of knives when you can get a set like the Miracle Blade set (which is ALSO probably equally as cheap and misleading) for only $40?  I noticed that one of the other reviews stated that she had bought a set of the knives from her niece because she wanted to be supportive.  I will also fairly say that this person also said she was hooked on the demonstration.  This is how Vector marketing is still around.  As soon as an employee demonstrates the knives to all their family and friends and gets some of them to buy knives, the work gets MUCH harder as complete strangers aren't as willing to buy from another stranger as they would a family member.  That is why so many college students have been suckered in, because Vector figures, if they get more and more college students to just sell to their family, then eventually, they will sell them to almost everybody.  Again, why pay so much for a misleading knife set when you can get a similarly misleading knife set for only $40?  It has been two years since I almost got suckered into the company so since then, I'm sure the prices have gone up.  i noticed now they were offering $15 an hour to employees.  You be the judge.  Get smart, be smart, buy smart.

Cutco recommended that I hand-wash my knives. No mention of the handle was mentioned but rather I think it had something to do with spots on the blades. I still put them in the dishwasher and have for about 5 years. They are great. I would like the paring knife to be a little sharper but that would be my fault for not having it sharpened. I have most of their knives and many of the kitchen utensils also. I don't know about the selling experience, but I am tickled as a consumer. And for my then boyfriend, now husband to have bought them for me.... was such a sweet thing for him to do.

You claimed that they are not dishwasher safe but don't provide any evidence. Being mad at the company for how they sell has nothing to do with the quality of the knifes... They are made of top end materials. My brother sells cutco and found that my grandmother had a cutco knife from over 25 years ago. The thing still works and looks good and she has almost always washed it in the dishwasher. I was at my girlfriends grandmas the other day who bought a set of cutco within the first couple of years they were on the market (like 40 or almost 40 years old) and they work great and she washes them in the washer. Get your facts straight from legitimate sources before you post please..

I am with nic53188’s on this. I'm 48 and have been working in the kitchen just about everyday since I was about 10.Just yesterday, one of the teenagers in the neighbourhood tried to sell me some Cutco knives, and very politely, I told him I could not afford to buy them as I thought they were very expensive. My poor neighbour, who's just came out of high school, was totally out of his element trying to sell them to us. I have two sets of knives that I picked up from Costco years ago and several more individual knives in my drawer that are from a company called Kane Kutlery that have served me well over the years. Together these knives have cost me less than $100.00. These same knives from Cutco would have costs me over $1000.00.

the person who posted is obviously uneducated; my dad has had cutco for 30 years and washes them in the dishwasher all the time; half the stuff you wrote about the company and job are not true either; ive also been working with vector for two years and its worked out great for me and many other successful sales reps; you really shouldnt post an article about a company/product that you clearly know nothing about

9 Dollars to get your entire set sharpened and polished is a nice deal, you only need to sharpen some of the edges every once in a while for carving, the table knives are not made to break down like most other brands. Oh and one other thing, the handles are attractive and are not plastic. The handles are 5% harder then bowling balls. The silver nickle rivits are the same construction as jet fighter rivits. The blade is a combination of metals, the blade is as good as a surgical blade. So you get a cleaner cut. The list goes on and on why CUTCO costs more then a $40 knife. The smallest knife is cheaper then that $40 knife and will last forever. Not too many companies can say that.

You have some valid points. However this job is not cut out for everyone...It takes someone with determination and alot of commitment. Also someone who can be comfortable with talking to someone they just met. They target college students because this is a perfect job for a college student. Not only can you set your own schedule, you have no set amount that you have to sell. You can sell and make as much as you want and the advancement opportunities the company offers are endless. Working for Vector Marketing also offers you really good resume experience. As for the "Forever Guarantee" it means what it says...This set of knives will last forever and if you have a problem with any of your knives cutco will fix, sharpen, or replace your them. You cannot compare cutco to a $40 set of knives, the construction is not even close to the same and i'm not trying to sell the knives to you so i wont go into that. So yes i will agree with you cutco isnt cut out for everyone to sell, but i disagree when you say people are "suckered" into buying cutco. People are "suckered into buying girl scout cookies, i mean come on how can you refuse a lil girl selling a box of cookies for a few bucks. If someone is going to spend hundreds of dollars on a set of knives its going to be something they want to buy and something they feel is a good investment. Anyway thats just my opinion...but what do i know...

thorxes is completely right. I am a sales rep for vector marketing and it has been that way for a year now. the shipping charge on sending all your cutco to new york to get it sharpened is $9.00 and considering that fast that you only buy them once in your life, you cant beat that

Any company that provides the training, experience and income that vector marketing gives to ALL college students is no scam

Take my personal word for it. Im 19 and i made $27,000 in one summer. How much did u make?

I agree with extemp. The knives are amazing, and considering the fact that someone ONLY has to pay shipping charges to get a knife fixed if it's damaged is ridiculously good. especially since most other companies' guarantees will only cover defects when you first buy them.

Also, you don't HAVE to send them to get them sharpened. You can call the company and they will send someone out to YOUR house and sharpen ALL of the Cutco you own.

And to reiterate, getting a BASE pay is pretty rare in the direct sales business. I know plenty of people that get paid only if they sell. With Cutco, you still make the $13 regardless.

Very misleading review. I worked for Vector and knew several people who made several thousand dollars in their first summer and went on to make much more as they began marketing to sstrangers. The shipping prices are reasonable (now $6 for up to 3 knives or $9 for as many as you want--some send in over 40 knives at a time) and the guarantee is amazing. I've seen people who bought knives back when the company started send them in for free sharpening and polishing. I own several pieces of Cutco and they do great in the dishwasher. You make money--a base pay--if you don't sell, or you get a commission if you do. That sounds pretty fair and generous to me. Not a whole lot of companies offer a base to their sales people. I and everybody I know have had a great experience with Vector and Cutco; I'm sorry this reviewer didn't.
