Not an entertainer, it didn't matter to me if my flatware was all from the same set. I had a mixed set - some from my mother, some from my husband's household when we got married, and probably even some from rummage sales. It didn't matter to me. But I'm getting older and becoming an adult and I realized that the kitschy set wasn't cutting it anymore. I needed "grown up" flatware.
I began by researching "flatware" on the common review/evaluation/opinion sites on the internet and found very little to guide me. I found only two review and oddly enough they were for the same set of flatware. One told me it was great, the other told me it was awful! What a conundrum. So I set out, blindly, basing my opinion on looks, price and bendablity. If I was able to bend a spoon easily, it was out of the running.
Here's a tip - Never buy anything from Kohl's department stores unless it's on sale. If it's not on sale wait a week or two and watch the advertising - trust me, everything in that store goes on sale sometime within a month.
Kohl's had a sale on flatware - all 50% off. I found flatware sale priced from $39.99 to $89.99. The higher priced set came with storage cases or wooden trays, but I didn't need that so I went with the $39.99 set of Cuisinart, even though that little voice in my head told me "Cuisinart makes blenders/processors NOT flatware." Also, some of the higher priced sets failed the bend test.
I came home, cleaned out all the drawers and settled the new stuff in. It was sorta fun getting used to the heaviness of a grownup set of flatware.
But, my delight was soon crushed. After two weeks of use in a three person household with about 8 dishwasher loads since purchase (that goes to say not all the forks, knives, and spoons were in all loads; but, say, worst case scenario, they were) my "new" flatware began showing rust spots. Little, 4mm round spots of rust colored stain that were not removable. So now my "new" flatware looks like it's old and cheap which is exactly what I was trying to get away from.
