I'd have to agree with the comment regarding the outside of the Crown Reef giving the false perception of luxury accomodations in the inside. We too were very disappointed in our recent stay (Sept. 7 thru 13, 2008). We stayed in a deluxe suite on the sixth floor in tower 2. We were originally in tower 3 on the fifth floor and moved, because of a mold problem in that room. By comparison from our previous stay in a similar room at the Sandcastle, I'd have to say the Sandcastle was much better. It was cleaner, didn't smell as musty, and the room was larger. Although, their prices have gone up since remodeling. The main thing the Crown Reef has going for it is the outside pools and lazy river. Other than that, it was nothing special. It's in dire need of being updated/refurbished. This is another case of "you get what you pay for." It was a lot cheaper than other hotels at Myrtle Beach, and I'm sure that when it does get fixed up, like the others, its rates will increase. If you are looking for a hotel that's on the same level as a Days Inn, stay at the Crown Reef. I'm not sure if all the hotels in Myrtle Beach smell musty during the more humid months...this is our first time staying in the Summer, we usually are there in early May. Personally, I couldn't handle one more night of sleeping on a hard, musty smelling mattress. Other issues we had with the room: the balcony was super small, the pipes rattled when trying to turn the bathtub faucet to hot, the toilet wobbled, like it wasn't bolted down, the toilet/bathtub was sectioned off in its own very tiny room, the lights in the bedroom didn't work from the switch--one lamp was broke, and the safe quit working suddenly on the fourth day. We got there right after Tropical Storm Hanna had left, so there was still a lingering smell of raw sewage in the parking ramp. But I had read someone else's comment about Crown Reef--they had stayed in the Spring and they had the same complaint. So maybe the sewage smell is an ongoing problem? Also, beware of being subjected to survey/sales promo harrassment calls. After our 16 hour drive there from Michigan, we were looking forward to getting some sleep, but had that interrupted by three phone calls from the jerks. Finally, my husband was able to get our name removed from their hit list. I think the calls were started by my listening to a pre-recorded "greeting" message that had been left in our voice mail upon our arrival. If you see a red flashing light on your phone, ignore it! Hope this helps you out.
