An exceptional gadget that puts the Ipod to shame

As someone who doesn't care for Apple's in-your-face, trendy hipster marketing, I deliberately steered away from the Ipod. I did look at it, but it was a typical Apple product - limited compatibility. I had a smaller, solid-state Creative Lab mp3 player, so I instinctively went towards the Zen Vision M, but only after doing the research. It does have a few quirks like to occasional freeze, but this thing is a delight. It has one of the clearest full color screens around, but I really don't understand the need for that. Who is really going to download a whole video onto something like this just to watch in on a tiny screen. Of course, the clarity does come in handy when reading album data and the like.

The Vision M has a very nice interface, but there is a bit of learning curve for anything beyond adjust volume and skipping to the next tune. The accompanying software is very intuitive and is also quite good for ripping and burning CDs.

I don't care for the ear-buds and the soft case. The buds fall out and the cream colored cloth case is nothing more than a bag. I purchased a good set Pioneer buds that wrap around your ears. I also purchased a protective skin from Creative that fits onto the player very snuggly and provides full access to all the bells and whistles.

Best of all, the Vision M has much better format compatibility than the Apple products. The Vision is a bit cheaper, but when you consider what you get (music, video, radio, voice recorder) it is an exceptional value.
