The latest and greatest from Crayola is the 3-D Sidewalk Chalk. After much fanfare, I took my kids, ages three and four, to the Toys R Us in-store event to try out this new product.
My kids were given a large sheet of black construction paper and a piece of dual-ended chalk that had a different color on each end. The store associate told us that the best results are obtained when you use the two colors side-by-side on the paper. Those colors complement each other and make the chalk drawings "pop" when viewed with the 3-D glasses.
There were also several stencils to choose from but only my son wanted to use one. My daughter, the budding artist, decided to draw free hand. With a bit of help from me, we managed to fill up enough space on the page with the two complementary colors to ensure that are results would pop off the page.
My kids were more excited to try out the 3-D glasses than to see their drawings in 3-D. They were impressed for maybe 20 seconds before begging me to take them toy shopping.
I inquired about purchasing the Crayola 3-D Sidewalk Chalk but was told that the only products left were the $19.99 packages. The smaller $9.99 packages were flying off the shelves and as of this review, are also temporarily not available for purchase online at Toys R Us.
While this seems to be a popular fad, my kids didn't show enough interest for me to buy this product. I did take them to a friend's house who has this, but they didn't want to play with it that day. My friend told me that her kids tired of it quickly and that the 3-D glasses had already been broken and tossed in the garbage.
For kids who really love to draw and are artistically inclined, I think that the Crayola 3-D Sidewalk Chalk would be perfect for them. However, if you have kids like mine, who easily go from one project to the other, you might be better off waiting to find this product at next years' garage sales.
