When I first saw commercials for Crank, I joked that it was the "Transporter III" because it looked similar to the Jason Statham's Transporter movies. Although the action was similar, Crank had a unique theme and was definitely different than the Transporter.
Plot
Chev Chelios awakes feeling strange. He finds out that Verona has poisoned him with a Chinese drug that slows his heart rate and he only has about an hour to live! Chev takes off running to find this jerk and figure out how to save his life. He learns that the only way to stay alive is to keep his adrenaline up! Can he manage to stay alive long enough to find Verona?? You'll have to watch and see!
Actors
Jason Statham .... Chev Chelios ... Jason did what he does best - action! Although Jason's life may end at any moment, he never stops with the action, the revenge, or the jokes. If you like Jason, you'd better see this. If you don't, then stay away. I most enjoyed the things Chev did to keep his adrenaline running. I have one example below, but the rest will be a surprise to you...
[paraphrased cell phone conversation]
Doctor: How do you feel now?
Chev: I feel alright
Doctor: And what are you doing?
Chev: Driving through a mall, being chased by cops.
Amy Smart .... Eve ... Amy plays a dumb blond who is Chev's girlfriend. She doesn't get into the movie right away, but when she finally does she is pretty good.... a little slutty, but otherwise pretty good.
Jose Pablo Cantillo .... Verona ... As the enemy in this movie, Jose was a good choice. He made me laugh because even though he acted sooooo confident and in charge, in some scenes you could tell he was really childish and he had a few temper tantrums.
My Thoughts
This movie is R for good reason. There is A LOT of swearing, a few scenes of nudity, and LOTS and LOTS of violence! If any of this bothers you stay away. A lot of it was really unnecessary to the plot.
As for violence - all I can say is ouch! A lot of gross and painful stuff happens! Guns are popular, and a few other things are used. You'll want to keep your kids away - there's probably no scene that you'd want them to see or line that you'd want them to hear.
This movie is non-stop action but it is only 87 minutes. I think they made it short so you didn't have time to get bored. My adrenaline was pumping from the start all the way to the end. I felt like going for a jog afterwards! I get a little antsy after drinking Mountain Dew, so seeing all the things Jason did to "speed up" made me think of how crazy I would go if that was me!
The camera work helped keep the action going. At some points it was almost like a superhero comic strip the way they paused the camera right at certain points. While Jason was constantly moving, the cameras were constantly moving. This sometimes made it hard to focus but I think that was the point. Jason was having a hard time seeing clearly, or thinking clearly, and so we felt just like he did. The music was fast paced also, so all of this combined should keep you on the edge of your seat.
There is a slight plot, but it's really not too deep. I didn't notice any major twists or turns. It's pretty straight-forward. The plot isn't that important in a movie like this, it's really all about the action and comedy.
Conclusion
This was a good watch and I'll probably catch it again in the future. I could only give it 4 stars because, although it was good, it didn't "wow" me or make me beg for more. 87 minutes was enough! I will watch it again to hear the funny comments and jokes. Check it out today and enjoy!!
