I have been doing some dealing on Craig's List in my local area and am finding it to have mixed results. The first couple of items I put on the list were not even responded to. After that, I put a few more things on and had people who wanted to meet me halfway, or 30 miles from my home. One person came to buy our trash compactor and drove more than an hour through traffic to get here, then paid the asking price. I knew there were people out there like me who would go to the seller's home instead of asking to meet me. After all, my town is listed in the ad.
We were doing some landscaping and offered some bushes for free. Within 5 hours, all 12 bushes were gone. Free things, especially bushes in the spring, go very fast.
I didn't try any more sales for a while, but we were taking down a garage door last month and my husband talked about cutting it into pieces that the dump would take. Instead, I thought about Craig's List again. I advertised it and within the day had an offer. This man lived even further away -- close to 90 minutes from my house -- but was willing to take it. He paid the asking price, and then I had 2 more offers after it was gone.
I haven't bought a lot items on Craig's List, but I'm looking into them for Christmas gifts. The items I want are extremely expensive new, but perfectly fine used. We'll see if I get these items for the price I want.
I'd suggest trying Craig's List and see what you get. We donate an awful lot of our usuable but unwanted items, but some things are just worth the effort to try and sell. I wouldn't make an effort to meet someone unless it was convenient for me, though. If someone wants an item, they need to be willing to come and get it.
