Many times we need to measure things around the house, be it to get a replacement for something or to build things. My tool of choice is a Craftsman measuring tape, they are easy to use and most have a clip to attach to your belt or pocket so it is always handy.

Craftsman 1/2" x 12' Measuring Tape

My measuring tape of choice is Craftsman, since I grew up using their tools I have come to trust their tools. This measuring tape has a hefty steel tape which is wound inside its case with a spring to help it reel itself back in. There is also a thumb button that will keep it out of its case when you are using it.

The increments of measurement are easy to read and are divided all the way down to 1/16th of an inch which is good enough for most anything around the house. I have used this to measure for window blinds as well as cutting shelf boards and even putting up my privacy fence and gate.

I have dropped it, stepped on it and have not had a breakage yet to the tape itself. Although these are made of steel they can be broken if you step on the tape if it is laying on its side. I never used to worry about breaking them but now I do. You see people were using them and if they wore the numbers off they would break the tape and return it for replacement. This type of abuse led to Sears changing the warranty on tape measures and no longer have a Lifetime Warranty on tape measures.

It is a shame that it came to that but I can't blame them one bit. The Lifetime Warranty still stands for tools just not measuring tapes.

Bottom Line

I will continue to buy Craftsman products regardless because the quality is far superior to many out there. The accuracy of the tape measures has never failed me. They will last a long time if taken care of so I have no worries that mine will age as gracefully as I have....ok hopefully a little better than me...lol

Of course since it is steel it is prone to rust (even though mine is a few years old and not rusted) I have to knock off one star plus the loss of the Lifetime Warranty.

lol on the cutting twice, I have to on occasion too......Yeah they have changed the warranty on quite a few things in the past few years...screwdrivers is another that comes to mind that is no longer a lifetime warranty.

Thanks for the info on the warranty. I had thought all Craftsman stuff was lifetime, so that's good to know. Unfortunately, I usually measure once and cut twice.

I did read a post that said they would honor those made before the change went into effect but I can't find anything on Sears.com that backs that statement up. Mine is getting worn a bit and I hope it stays in good shape because I like it. When the change went into effect the lower priced ones changed too. The comparable one to mine now looks like a dollar store tape measure!

I wonder if the stuff before the Lifetime warranty was put into effect would still be covered? Odd that they would change that. Craftsman always used to stand behind all of their tools...I better keep mine in a zip lock...just in case :)

Your right on all counts. My problem is, I detest Sears and can't stand to give them any money.
