Some magazines are read for pleasure and others are read strictly for business/professional reasons. I read a little of both and I like to keep a variety of magazines around so that the right one is available when I need it. An example of a magazine that is strictly business oriented is CPA Technology Advisor, a magazine for Certified Public Accountant professionals.

Magazine Commentary:

CPA Technology Advisor is a professional magazine designed with the CPA in mind. Rather than concentrate on general accounting procedures, taxation, auditing, and the like, this magazine is geared toward CPA's and, more specifically, toward CPA's who work in small to medium sized tax and accounting firms.

Because this magazine is designed for CPA professionals, the articles contained within often deal with important CPA issues, with an emphasis on technology. It is common to find reviews/previews of new technology products and services, like accounting software and special auditing methods. It is also common to find advice on shortcuts and innovation in the world of accounting, helping to make the process of balancing debits and credits that much simpler.

The writing in CPA Technology Advisor is a little on the plain and unexciting side. This is due, of course, to the nature of the magazine and its primary reading base. This magazine is designed for CPA professionals who have little spare time on their hands and who need answers quickly. Because of this, the writers in CPA Technology Advisor don't beat around the bush- they talk directly and get to the point in as few words as possible. You won't find many creative writers in a magazine like this one. The writing/editing process is along the lines of "Here's the question, Here's the answer".

CPA Technology Advisor is a large magazine based on its physical dimensions, measuring about 13.5 inches in height and 11 inches in width. The magazine isn't very thick, however, with fewer than 100 pages per issue. The large size and the thinness make it flimsy and it is common to find pages torn when the issue arrives in the mail. The paper is made from good quality stock but the lack of pages makes it weak and susceptible to damage before it reaches your mailbox.

Bottom Line:

CPA Technology Advisor is, overall, a passable magazine for someone who works in a CPA firm and it does offer direct solutions and plain spoken advice for different problems and concerns. There isn't much excitement to be found in this magazine and there isn't much that will appeal to anyone who doesn't work as a CPA or, at least, in an accounting role. It ranks as a very average magazine and if I didn't have a work history in accounting, I would probably rate it lower. But I can understand its value for people working in this type of occupation so for this reason, I will give CPA Technology Advisor a small recommendation.
