I began reading Cosmopolitan at the age of 16 in place of younger magazines like Teen and Seventeen. My first thoughts at that age were, "Oh, my goodness, are they really talking about (*whisper) 'sex'?" I was so curious that four four years I was a faithful reader, taking in every issue I could get my hands on. The pros to reading such a magazine were that I had some good tips and I was much more focused on the physical aspect of my relationship than when I missed an issue. I gained confidence in my plethora of tricks, and I also had some good style and beauty tips.
However, by the age of 21 or 22, this all changed. This was about the time I was really getting into the meat of my major, English: Literary and Cultural Studies, where I was exposed to literature of the highest caliber. Within a few short months, I had refined my taste in writing and it seemed Cosmopolitan no longer made the cut. I began to realize that the articles had become repetitive and uninformative, irrelevant, or just plain crazy. Although I admit, it is still quite entertaining, I have to say that as a 16 year-old, unexperienced girl, it was much too mature for me. I think this magazine is well suited to college-aged girls and those who are looking to spice up their life in the bedroom, but not intellectually stimulating, on the whole. For that, you must look to magazines like The New Yorker, I'm afraid.
