I shopped around for quite awhile when my son was about to outgrow his infant car seat... At first I was looking at all those really expensive car seats thinking they would be better, but then when I went to the stores to compare them, they didn't seem any better than the Cosco car seat! I expected the expensive ones to be softer, more padding or something, but they weren't. The Cosco car seat looked safe to me, and I liked that it had a cup holder on it, which will come in handy later when my son is a little older. It is rear facing up to 1 year and 20 pounds, and then can be front facing, I think up to 40 pounds. It has all the stuff like latch system straps/hooks, and another kind of strap to buckle it in. My car doesn't have all that but it buckled in safely and securely with the seat belt. I will admit it is hard to get it buckled in tight enough so that it doesn't move, but I think that goes for any car seat that is buckled in with a seat belt. I know it was tough getting his infant seat buckled in tight too. As for the comfort of it, my son doesn't mind riding in it even for long trips. It doesn't have all that much padding (but none of them do) although my sister said I could get some foam and pad it if there was room under the fabric on it, which I think there is. She had an expensive car seat for her son and still had to pad it with foam for the long trips. The Cosco car seat is inexpensive, it was the cheapest one I found, which was great because I'm on a tight budget.
