Background
My husband and I own an 1800s house. We have spent the last 4 years upgrading every aspect of our house-- painting, bathrooms, outdoor reconstruction, garages, etc. We recently thought we were finished when we got sucked into a new project-- finishing our basement.

Here's the scoop-- we always left the basement alone since we didnt need the room. But, now that we have two active kids that have taken over our house, we thought we better venture into the land down under. This will hopefully give us some form of kiddie toy relief in our main living space!

Boy-- this was no small task. As a point of reference, we could have grown things in our basement--- I think we may have-- with mold!  We basically had a dirt floor. So, flooring and foundation became a big decision for us.

Goals
Since we have hardwood floors throughout our house, we wanted to keep with that classic style. However, we were worried that it may feel "cold". So, we had a couple of basic goals in mind; we wanted:

1. Environmentally friendly
2. Great with little ones- playdo, coloring, etc
3. Can handle spills, water, or other mishaps
4. Brings warmth to our basement
5. Has a classic look (we wanted to keep with the direct style of our home)

Our decision- cork flooring
We narrowed down our options to hardwood and alternative products. After doing some digging, we settled on CORK. Yes, CORK. It actually achieved all of the above goals. It is only made from the outer layer of trees, it is softer than traditional wood, repels water, has significantly more warmth than hardwood, yet looks very similar. And, it is actually pretty easy to install. In fact, many people install it themselves. (we didnt, because we needed a subfloor, but they sent along the adhesive so that we could do it alone if we desired. If you are doing a kitchen or another room, it is probably pretty easy to do)

The only downside of course, was price. Cork generally costs the same as hardwood-- I think $6-$10/sqft depending on the quality and design. That includes everything-- installation and material. So, for 1,000sqft, plan to spend around $10k for everything. Is it pricey? Yes! But, it looks really nice and was a great alternative to carpet and hardwood.

So, do we like our cork flooring??? So far, YES!
1. We really like the way it looks. Cork flooring comes in many different colors and patterns. So, there are lots of great options available to you. It has a very classic look and is a nice complement to our hardwood floors throughout the house.

2. Our kids have already spilled and stuck playdo all over the floor and no problemo- everything comes right up!

3. The basement feels warm... really warm. We arent carpet people, so this was the best alternative.

4. It's soft. Walking on it without shoes is no problem. It not only feels warm, but it feels soft.

Our bottom line on cork flooring
Overall, I would say that we are really pleased with our cork flooring. If you are in the process of making home improvements, you should definitely consider this alternative material. It has so many advantages over wood-- and it's great for the environment too!

I'm in the process of getting a house with a couple of friends of myne and we are looking for ways to finish our basement. When I saw this, and it said Cork flooring, I was blown away that there even was such a thing. What a fantastic idea. It might take some saving because the basement is huge but, what a great idea. Great review!

Are there specific brands of cork flooring that are recommended over others?

In response to Jolie's comment from May 5, 2008 at 10:41PM:

They claim it is safe for kitchen... But one of my main things was the "repels water" and helped "sound-proofing". We have been doing tile and hard wood thoughout the house and we are starting to pick up a echo,It seems to only bother me but with kids, thats another thing it is kidproof threw wear and tear my kids are getting bigger but not better yet, high traffic. so with you having kids helps ease my mind in this direction a little better.

We've had the flooring now for a year or so and everyone that sees it loves it. :) Im not certain it is fully waterproof, but it definitely repels water. ;)

I seen this on review for diy network and was suprised to hear it was waterproof. I was thinking of doing this in the kitchen, we are getting rid of all of our carpeting too we have a hallway and one bedroom left to do, and the kitchen is 16 years old and we want to update the flooring in there.

In response to wiangube's comment from Nov 30, 2007 at 2:47PM:

Im not certain we are talking about the same thing. Corks impact on the environment is quite low due to the sustainable harvesting practices and almost zero waste from the manufacturing process. Producing nations regulate how frequently cork can be harvested in order to minimize damage to the trees. The trees survive the debarking process although they are more susceptible to injury until the protective bark is regenerated.

Hi Jolie, I would have chosen the hardwood flooring, it's more 'environmentally friendly'. Just check these: http://www.gatewoodfloors.com/

I always wondered about using cork flooring and I found your review very nice indeed. I have been thinking about redoing our family room and replace the carpet. Sounds like cork may be the way to go and it would compliment the fireplace in a natural way.

Excellent review. I'm wondering how cork stands up to heavy foot traffic? Specically, high heels? It does really look beautiful .

Jolie - this is spot on. Cork is a fantastic material. I used to be a contractor for historic restoration and high end environmentally friendly construction. We installed cork on walls, floors and other areas. The material is durable(if treated properly), sound dampening, a good insulator and best of all natural and environmentally friendly. A great review! Thanks for bringing good stuff to people. Always, Phil

To me there is nothing like a hardwood floor. I just love them and really hate walking around on carpet covered plywood. That cork sounds like a good idea for a basement. How does it wear?

Nice review. I never thought of using cork. I thought there was a shortage, at least that's what the wineries tell us.

Sounds really nice. I agree, you really want your basement to have that warm feeling.

I never heard of this type of flooring but it sounds wonderful. Thanks for sharing the info with us!

Ooooh I'm so envious! I wanted to put cork in our kitchen last summer when we replaced the floor in there but I couldn't convince John on cork. I can related to the 1800s house too. My parents' house was built in 1880 so we had that creepy dungeon like basement. ~~~shudder~~~ Great review!

I have an older home too and need to make some decisions on flooring. I'll have to look at cork. Sounds interesting.

Everything I've read about cork praises it as a material.
