Core Rhythms Four Workout Starter Set —

Quick View: I love Latin dance and I love working my abs standing rather than on a mat. This set promised to work my core and make it fun! Well, it works my core but it isn't as fun as I hoped. Still, I do one of the two main workouts every few days because it's constant hip swiveling, belly burning action.

The Core Rhythms Four Workout Set

I saw this four DVD set advertised late at night and endorsed by Dancing with the Stars' head judge Len Goodman as well as So you Think You Can Dance's Judge Mary Murphy. They ought to know what's good and bad, right?

Well, I have no doubt that these workouts do target the core and will help firm the area but I was a bit disappointed because these aren't really dance workouts. They are exercise ones that have a lot of repetition and a lot of very fast paced moves.

The instructors are world champion Latin dancers Jaana Kunitz and Julia Powers. There are a couple women and a couple of men behind them. There are no modifiers and really, they never suggest any modifications. Good things about the workouts are that you can choose to view them from the front or back and, on the long workout, can get help instantly by clicking the help button. That will show you the current move step by step so you can do it right. At all times, there is a screen behind them with a very thin, ultra toned torso of a woman doing the workout so you can see how your abs should look and should be moving. I hate that woman. She doesn't inspire me; she makes me feel hopeless!

The instructors have heavy accents but are understandable. The music is is what disappoints. It's just a beat, not good Latin music. It actually sounds more like Middle Eastern music at times.

The DVDs

DVD 1 is a Kick Start one where the trainers teach you each move in a slow-paced environment. You can see a split screen of the workout and "the torso lady" to be sure you doing the moves right. Generally, you will only need to watch this a time or two but some people actually use this DVD as a workout.

The second is the Quick Workout, which is 20 minutes long. There is no warm up. You just start and go from there. You will swivel your hips continuously as you follow along doing different moves and even banging imaginary drums. I like this workout best because 20 minutes is about all of the repetition I can take. Parts are very fast paced and you might get tripped up so go at your own pace and don't try to keep up if you can't! The cool down is actually the best part because the music is a sexy Latin instrumental and the hip swiveling feels sexy and more fun that the frenzied pace of the workout.

The third DVD is the Full Workout. That is 45 minutes long and again, you can see a front view or a back view and, on this one, you can get help at any point. I never stopped and got the help but I like that it is there. This one gets a bit boring at times. You are swiveling your hips very fast and doing the same moves repeatedly. It gets really challenging as well. Some moves are high impact so modify as needed if you have knee or other problems that preclude high impact moves. The cool down, again, is sexy and fun to do.

The last DVD is a Learning to Dance one. I haven't even watched it. Dancing champions Bob and Julia Powers (one of the instructors on the DVDs and her husband) teach three Latin dances - Salsa, Meringue and RumbLatin moves - for you to use on a real dance floor. I will get to that when my abs look like the instructors'.

This set was about $39.95 and is worth the cost. Although I much prefer Hip Hop Abs to Core Rhythms for standing ab work, this is a different type of workout. I do see similarities in movements though. Standing crunches are standing crunches no matter what spin you put on them.

The instructors are personable and almost too bubbly at times and the work is tough but not so complicated that you will be unable to do the work properly. Really all it is, is constant fast swiveling of the hips with some fancy footwork and arm work added for variety. But don't be fooled. This is WORK. You'll want to stop. You will want to give up. However, after a few times, you will get into it and just rock those hips.

I prefer better music like what is on the Latin dance workout DVD Zumba, but, for working the core, Core Rhythms is a good choice. If you like Latin type moves and want to trim the tummy without crunches, try Core Rhythms. I alternate this set with my Hip Hop Abs set and my abs get worked every single night. This isn't easy but it also isn't as tough as Hip Hop Abs Full Body Burn. The hip swiveling is key and the rest will come to you as you do the workouts. Although this isn't as fun as Hip Hop Abs, it's a completely different environment that has some good features and definitely works the abs.

My Viewpoint

This set is decently priced and somewhat innovative. I believe anyone can do the workouts if they just stick with them and I believe that your core will feel it. If you like Latin inspired workouts, this one may be for you. I do get a little bored with the repetitions but I also feel the work in my abs and that's what counts. I am going with 4 stars. I personally enjoy Hip Hop Abs more but it isn't the workout, it's just the style of the instructor and the "fun factor". Core Rhythms is definitely a high energy, belly fat burning workout set. You also get a little pamphlet with a suggested diet but I don't follow diets that come with workouts. You may like the suggestions.

Yes it is, I was told that taking 2 of them and 2 Tylenol is almost the same as going to the emergency room and getting a shot. So far it has worked for me and I hope it continues too. Being allergic to bees is another reason I wear gloves and a face shield on my motorcycle, if I ran into a bee without them I would be in serious trouble! ;)

Absolutely! And I think we should get together and have a business meeting and plan for the future!

It's fun but really fast paced. I like the long workout better I think because it gives you little breaks in between to march and slow down. I lost 2.5 inches off my waist in a couple of months doing this and Hip Hop Abs so I'm not complaining!

I know. It's kind of frustrating to buy a work out with people who are in perfect buff shape and to realize that it will be a LONG time before I will even get close to looking like that. I like the idea of doing the Rumba. I love Latin dances. If you remember the name, let me know!

Benadryl is amazing stuff. I can't get over how effective it is. I use it for my severe dust allergy and it works like a charm. But then I want to sleep for a few hours. Still, well worth it to ward off allergic reactions.

This would be fun.

I wish I could just buy it and look like that lol. I saw one for the Rumba dance? or something like that. Least it doesn't use that darn ball. lol

It was real scary when I found somebody moved my benadryl off my desk.....It was a mad rush to find it! Mine isn't bad enough yet for the stick pin, providing I get 2 benadryl in me within the first 10 minutes it is tolerable. After that it's get my butt to the hospital as quick as I can get there.

I think it's the boodie. Must need a good one for balance for dancing. I can say this (-: Another member of the no butt club.

Smooth? Bwahaha. I wouldn't even considering dancing in public (I danced like four slow dances at weddings because I HAD to.) I have no rhythm at all. My kids laugh at how I look like a flapping chicken when I try to do dance workouts. But at least I'm shielding the masses from my uncoordination! lol.

Absolutely in private! If anyone saw me doing this workout, they would fall to the ground laughing. I am VERY klutzy when it comes to, well, everything, but I learned to just do whatever when I can't figure out the exact moves.

Oh, we have a beehive in our yard and they are everywhere. My son isn't allergic but completely phobic and he freaks when he sees bees. The kid is 22 and isn't scared of anything...but bees. When I see a bee, I stand still and hope it thinks I am a tree or something. I have never been stung yet!

Haha, my abs aren't a pretty sight either. I am so jealous of the "torso lady" on the screen. But then, I had two almost 9 pound kids, two ab operations, and am old. I AM getting defined and losing some of the "muffin top" though.

In response to LisaCarey's comment from Apr 25, 2008 at 11:28PM:

Oh, you will move! I did the long workout last night and was so surprised at how fast it went by. I guess I got caught up in shaking my groove thing. lol. I actually liked the workout better after I wrote the review saying it was sort of boring. I realized it was sort of boring because I was doing the same short workout. The longer one mixed things up and got me going!

CyndiA wrote on Apr 26, 2008 at 12:28PM

I'll bet I'm too much of a klutz to do this one - maybe in private though (-:

kid-kansas wrote on Apr 26, 2008 at 2:55AM

I find my best workout is when I am running from bees in my yard, I hate being allergic...;)

AnnaBanana wrote on Apr 26, 2008 at 12:54AM

This is a great review but I think what I would need if I did this would be a "Help Me Get Up!" button. They should show MY abs on this DVD. Believe me, everybody else would feel better about their own! I'm sure you're keeping in good shape and I love your reviews, Patty!

LisaCarey wrote on Apr 25, 2008 at 11:28PM

LOL, they sure do. I woke up the next day after the first time thinking I fell or something and didn't remember it but it was just soreness from all that hip action. Man, I'm getting old!

In response to Jolie's comment from Apr 25, 2008 at 10:35PM:

It can get tricky because it is so darn fast but they do several slow moves before going to the fast moves. Whenever I get tripped up, I just do whatever I want to do as long as I keep my hips swiveling. This isn't too complicated. I am sure you wouldn't have any trouble picking up the moves.I still prefer my beloved hip Hop Abs set though. Lots of fun!

GeorgeChabot wrote on Apr 25, 2008 at 10:37PM

I've seen that commercial and they really swivel their hips! ;>

Jolie wrote on Apr 25, 2008 at 10:35PM

I really dont like when they have complex choreography. I never seem to be able to keep up even though I can keep a beat. Is it hard to keep up?
