Quick View: I really like the starter set of Core Rhythms Latin Dance fitness DVDs that I bought and I was ready to expand my collection. I bought four more DVDs in a boxed "Club Mix" set which have the same instructors and same basic moves, just geared toward different body parts. Swing Sensation is geared toward the hips and thighs and, as always, the core. I really enjoy it!

About Core Rhythms Club Mix - Swing Sensation

You can buy several different Core Rhythm Club Mix DVDs on their own or buy the Club Mix set which has four different DVDs and four completely different workouts. Swing Sensation is led by the same instructors as the basic Core Rhythms set - Latin dancers Julia Powers and Jaana Kunitz. I thought the name "Club Mix" meant that the setting would be club-like and different but it isn't. The set is the same as other Core Rhythm DVDs - a hardwood floor and a giant screen behind the dancers with a toned torso doing all the moves up close. Behind Jenna and Julia is a guy and a girl doing the workout with them.

The workout starts out with a fast paced warm up and launches into a lot of hip action as well as tummy tucking. The first few minutes of the workout are kind of "same ole, same ole" if you have done Core Rhythms before but then suddenly, the music changes to a swing beat and you are swing dancing. Sorta. This is exercise and your body will feel every move. Still, the swing music is good and the moves really target those hips, thighs and the core. There are a few higher impact moves on this DVD like some hops but you can modify to suit your needs.

There is always a HELP option shown on the screen which you can press to see a move broken down and practice before doing it but I honestly never found a need to use it. You can also choose to watch the dancers from the front or the back. I choose the front but it's whatever is best for you.

Little details make this a really fun workout. While doing Pasa Doble moves toward the end, the instructors are sure to have the male exerciser keep his hands and wrists still, while the females twist them. They definitely know the dances and make sure that the moves you do are authentic.

The entire workout is around 45 minutes. The warm up and cool down are about eight minutes total so you get about 37 minutes of cardio while toning the core, hips, and thighs. And it's FUN. This is one of my favorites from the eight DVDs I have from Core Rhythms. The music is much better than in others and the work is tough but fun. I actually smile when I do this workout even though I am sweating buckets.

If you like dancy DVDs and want to tone as well as burn fat, try Core Rhythms Club Mix - Swing Sensation! It's not easy but it's fun and effective. Since I started working out to Core Rhythms, I have lost three inches off my waist, three off my lower abs, and almost two inches off my hips. This is in combination with Hip Hop Abs with Shaun T. by Beachbody. I have NEVER had a waist but I do now!

As an extra, this DVD has a "Latin Dance Made Easy" segment where Julia Powers (the blond) and and her husband Bob show you how to perform two Latin dances. It's really hard to follow and I don't bother with it but it is there if you want to learn the moves with a partner.

My Viewpoint

Core Rhythms Club Mix - Swing Sensation is a fun, tough (but not overwhelmingly so) cardio workout that targets the hips, thighs, and core. It has good music, good cuing, and you have time to actually practice before launching into fast moves. Some may consider the moves repetitive because they do go over the steps and you do repeat sequences but I find it fun to do what I know and to not trip over my feet trying to figure out tough dance combos. This has enough dance, enough cardio, and enough fun to stick with it. My only niggle is that there is no one modifying the higher impact steps. I took a star off for that but still, this one is a keeper. 4 stars.

The best thing to do is to get the Core Rhythms Kick Start DVD which slowly shows you the moves they use in almost all their DVDs. I don't find it hard to follow and I am a HUGE klutz. The good thing is there is a help function on every DVD that you can press and the DVD will pause, the instructors will show you how to do a move slowly, and then you go back to the workout. I think as long as you're moving, you're burning calories and never have to be perfect with these DVDs.

Thanks. I try to be serious as often as I can but sometimes....well, you know me!

So -- are there a lot of tough combos to learn? I avoid some of these at times because you have to pick up a routine too quickly. While I like to dance, I dont like the pressure when I am working out. I need stress relief- not more stress.

You're funny.

It's about as much fin as cardio can get - except maybe Richard Simmons' stuff. I'm a softy for Richard and he really knows how to make exercise fun. I still workout to his stuff from the 80's and it still is fun!

This sounds like a lot of fun! It was fun reading about it, anyway!

You can borrow it. You'll like it. I really did lose inches off my waist and you know I have a barrel body. Had. I'm actually getting a waist. Whoo hoo.

It's getting crazy. I have a whole bin of older workouts in the garage and all my new ones everywhere. I really must stop this obsession. My husband is going nuts. He has no room for anything. But *I'm* smaller anyway. :)

Sounds like a good one! Great review. :)
