Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen Spray Lotion is a great product to provide long-lasting sun protection for even fair-skinned people like my family. We camped at Hunting Island State Park, a very sunny beach in the South in July/August 2008.
I'm a cancer nurse with a family history of skin cancer, so I'm going to do what I can to protect myself and my daughters from the sun. I applied this suntan lotion to myself and the girls before leaving the camper in the mornings and would re-apply in the afternoon. I tended to keep us in shaded areas or inside during the middle of the day, so we did not test this product to its maximum ability, but it really seemed to do the job because none of us had sunburns. I tend to sunburn if I look outside, so that was a welcome relief.
Later in the week, I goofed by forgetting to re-apply the sunscreen when we changed into swimming suits. I had applied the sunscreen while we were wearing shorts and shirts, so more skin was exposed with the swimming suits. Well, I got each child out of the pool and tried to dry them off and re-apply the sunscreen, but it does not apply well unless the skin is completely dry. (I can vouch that it seems to be waterproof!) They ended up with slight burns only on the areas I had missed when they had shirts and shorts on.
I think I prefer the regular bottle that you squeeze to the pump spray we used on this trip. You still have to rub the sunscreen in and it seemed to take longer pumping the product because only a small amount of lotion would come out with each pump. When you have three children who are in a hurry to play, it helps to be able to move as quickly as possible. The pump kind has a little plastic lid to keep up with, so it's asking for trouble when traveling if you lose the cap. Also, you should not spray this product on the face. Instead, spray into your hand and then apply to the face. When applying to children, it's safest to apply to your hands and then rub onto their skin.
Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen Spray Lotion has a three year shelf life and now clearly marks the expiration date on most of their supplies. I called the company and spoke with a representative who said that the product should be at full strength until the expiration date, so you may want to purchase the sunscreen at the end of this season to use for next season if the expiration date is far enough out.
My kids and I also have a sensitivity to gluten, and at the time I'm writing this review, this product is gluten-free, but I could not find that information on their website. They do have an 800 number and I was able to get the information regarding gluten content pretty quickly over the phone.
My Viewpoint:
Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen Spray Lotion is a great sunscreen because it is effective and long-lasting. Just make sure to apply it to dry skin, and you may want to consider the squeeze bottle if traveling.
