I've been wearing contacts since I was 20 years old, and I'm not going to tell you how many years ago that was, but suffice it to say they didn't have disposable contacts back then. I think it's one of the greatest inventions, though, in the years since. Now that my kids are both teenagers, I have switched them over to disposable contacts as well, and they're using the same brand I do, Vertex Sphere.

My 16-year-old son broke his glasses first, towards the end of the school year. He needed a new eye exam anyway, and I knew it would be a week or so before he got new glasses shipped, and I wanted him to be able to see for his finals. He asked if he could switch to contact lenses, and he had a history of breaking his glasses, but had been better, so we thought this was a good time to try the contacts. He struggled to get them in for fifteen minutes or so in the training at the eye doctor's office, and a little at home, ten minutes or so every day to get them in, but within no time he was popping them in and out with ease.

Next up was my 13-year-old daughter. She broke her glasses a week and a half before school was going to start, and we couldn't get her in to see the eye doctor until two days before the start of school. We knew the only way she'd be able to see on her first day at school would be if she tried contacts. My son will never let us forget that he had to wait until he was 16, while his sister only had to wait until she was 13, but it was just the way it worked out. I was very hesitant with her, but I wanted her to be able to see those first days at school.

It was my daughter that had the most trouble getting the lenses in and out. Her training at the eye doctor's office took nearly and hour and a half. She had to work through the reflexes of blinking while putting them, and after that, would either look down, to the side, or move her finger to the side when putting them in. Eventually she got them in that day. A few days later I wasn't sure if she'd have lenses in as she went to school, because her excitement and anxiety was making it hard to put them in, but I told her to put it away for a little bit, dry her hair and get dressed, then come back to it. That worked. After a week, she has it down to five minutes or so.

The care of these lenses takes nothing at all. The kids, or all three of us for that matter, take them out at night, clean them a little, put them in the case, add solution, and pop them back in in the morning. Two weeks later, we throw them out and get new ones. Despite thinking the kids would struggle with it, they've both followed up with their care quite well. My son lost a lens in the first couple of days, but hasn't lost one since, and my daughter ripped one the first couple of days, but hasn't ripped one since. It seems to be just something they needed to both learn.

I do quite well with these lenses as well. Sometimes there are some weird ones in the bunch, but I just pitch that one and get a new one. Like one that always felt weird when I put it in no matter what I did, and another looked almost crimped around the edges when I got it out of the package. Those are just typical factory defects. I sometimes have problems with my eyes and allergies, but these contacts are supposed to help that, and seem to, which should do well with my kids who also have allergies. I, and my kids as well for that matter, can wear these lenses in complete comfort all day long. They just seem like the perfect lenses for everyone.
