I have been a subscriber to Consumer Reports for many years.  I refer to it whenever I want to buy a new product, especially a TV, washing machine, dryer, etc.  If I hadn't referred to this magazine when I bought my new washer and dryer, I would have bought a repair-prone washer.  I do believe their ratings are unbiased, however, some of their other articles do show some bias, but I can overlook that as long as the ratings are unbiased.  I like the fact that they also look at small items, like peanut butter, as an example and tell you the best buys for types of food, etc.  I never would have tried an off brand of peanut butter had I not read about it in Consumer Reports.I am constantly digging out the old magazines to re read the reviews when I decide I need to buy something new.
