Consumer Reports should be your first source before making any purchase - major or minor. Whether you're looking to buy a toaster, laptop, or car...check them out. Get in the habit!!! It will always provide you with information you didn't start with. My personal beefs with them (currently) notwithstanding, they are always the best source and should be the first.

My current beefs: they review too many SUVs, they no longer review stereo receivers often, nor do they check for the current ohm handling capability ( this is important! Most receivers don't accurately rate their ohm capability-and if you purchase speakers with a lower ohm rating then the receiver, you risk blowing the receiver.  Yamaha and high-end receivers are all capable of handling 4 ohm speakers...but others...who knows?).
