Last Friday was my monthly Girls Night Out with Memaw and Carla.  I guess it was my turn to choose the movie and Carla and I both agreed that we wanted to see Confessions Of A Shopaholic.  This was a cute and funny movie.  It wasn't one those sentimental and mushy style movies that the guys dread accompanying the girls to.  It was a comedy romance that in the end really was a lesson in love and finances.

The main cast was:

  • Isla Fisher as Rebecca Bloomwood
  • John Goodman as Graham Bloomwood
  • Joan Cusack as Jane Bloomwood
  • Hugh Dancy as Luke Brandon
  • Krysten Ritter as Suze
  • Robert Stanton as Derek Smeath

Rebecca Bloomwood is a 25-year-old who loves to shop.  If she thinks the accessories will compliment an outfit she has to have it no matter the cost.  When she sees it she buys it and usually her way of buying is charging.  As a young child she believed that credit cards were pretty magic plastic cards that had the power to buy anything and make you happy.  But as she got older she found herself drowning in a sea of endless debt and she has got to find a way to pay off all the bills that she has accumulated.

Rebecca is a journalist who dreams of writing for a fashion magazine.  When she believes the window of opportunity has been opened she jumps on the chance to get an interview.  She is pleasantly surprised when she sees whom will be interviewing her and who her competition is in the fashion industry.  But the one big problem is that she has taken a position writing for a financial magazine for the same company that produces the fashion magazine.  How can she write articles and give financial advice when she can't even budget a dollar?  Her column The Green Scarf Woman begins getting a lot of attention and there may just be a way for her to pay all her debts off after all.

Rebecca lives with her best friend Suze.  Suze is very understanding of her plight so hardly ever accepts the rent money because she knows Rebecca needs it more than she does.  At one point in the movie Suze picks out the most special dress in the world for Rebecca to wear in her wedding.  Rebecca is in need of money and makes a decision on what she must return.  Does she return an outfit or the hideous maid of honor's dress?

Rebecca's parents (Graham and Jane) are very eclectic and have been saving their entire life to retire on the open road.  When they realize their daughter has hit hard times they decide to help out.  You will have to see Confessions Of A Shopaholic to see what they do.  Will they give up their dreams of traveling the world to help their daughter?  A memorable quote is when John Goodman is trying to tell his daughter that she will get thru this.  He tells her that if our economy can be billions of dollars in debt and still survive then so can she.

A really funny part of the movie was when Suze encourages Rebecca to attend a support group for shopaholics.  It was funny to see the members discuss their addictions and even funnier when Rebecca took over the group and everyone began longing for yet another shopping excursion.

Rebecca has racked up over $16,000 in credit card debts and she has a debt collector, Derek Smeath, hounding her.  When she refuses to return his phone calls he does the unspeakable.  Smeath goes to her hometown to see her in person.  In the meantime, Rebecca meets Luke and when she is strapped for cash and just must have a certain green scarf he gives her the money.  As the movie progresses you will see the significance of the green scarf and Luke's donation.

I laughed throughout the movie and there were moments when I thought I was going to cry.  I have never heard of Hugh Dancy but I must say he was nice to look at and I loved his English accent.  Dancy and Fisher make a beautiful onscreen couple.

The producers did a wonderful job approaching the subject of credit card use, abuse and debt collecting.  It was funny to hear Rebecca make up one story after another on why she couldn't pay a bill or why she wasn't available and when Smeath appears in person then it just gets more hilarious.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic seemed to portray a growing problem in the U.S. and as I watched I was just glad that I didn't own a credit card.  But what I did realize that I can be just as guilty as the person who abuses a credit card.  I know there are times when I will not pay the full amount on a bill so that I can have extra money for something I think I just need.  I have learned thru the years to budget my finances but I know I could still do better.  My excuse: I'm single and I don't make a lot of money.  When you have a mortgage, car payment, utilities and every thing else then it does get hard sometimes.  Living on a budget is tough but not impossible but in my case "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."

I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants a good laugh.  I wouldn't pay the $20+ to buy the DVD right when it is released but I would definitely add it to my video collection once the price was reduced.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic was about 115 minutes long.  It was rated PG-13 for some language and perhaps mild sensuality.  There is also a soundtrack available and many of the songs were from the 80s and/or remakes from 80s songs.

I thought the same thing as you about Isla Fisher playing Giselle in "Enchanted" but we were both wrong. I googled it when I came home and Amy Adams played Giselle. Disney needed someone who could also sing. They do resemble each other though.

I think the movie did teach a good lesson about not overindulging yourself. I'm not sure if my sister would want her 11-year-old to see the movie b/c a lot of it might go over her head but it was a very heartwarming story and if my sister asked my opinion I would say, "Go for it."

I got in credit card debt while in college and I vowed that if I could get them paid off I would never charge another thing. The Lord has been good to me and I have learned to second guess if I REALLY need something. With this economy I am learning just how important it is to stick to a budget but I do have some fun every once in a while. I just don't over do it. ~Gigi

Confession #2: I'm not being too attentive. I just saw the comment posted below mine where you told Mindy that the next movie would be "Duplicity." I'm sure you will enjoy that since you are a big fan of Julia Roberts! I look forward to that review! ~Anna Leigh

I confess: I took Brantleigh and one of her friends to see this movie and yes, it was really cute. I wasn't sure about taking them but the little girl wanted Brantleigh to go to the movies w/her for her birthday. The friend's mother suggested it b/c she believes Isla Fisher was also in "Enchanted." I thought the movie was good and the girls did seem to pick up on the importance of saving for a a rainy day but I had to bite my lip a few times when a bad word was thrown out. I want Shelton to see it so that he knows my spending habits are nothing compared to this ;+) I admire you that in this day and time you don't have a credit card--that's commendable. So, what's on the agenda for Girl's Night Out this month? ~Anna Leigh

If you go with your girlfriends you will have a blast! My next Girls Night Out--hopefully next Friday will be Duplicity with Julia Roberts and Clive Owens. Have a great weekend.

Excellent review! I am going to call up some girlfriends and see if they want to watch this with me. If I hadn't read your review, I'm not sure if I would have wanted to see it because the movie trailer that I saw was a bit cheesy. The producers should hire you to promote it! :)

I have most of my bills automatically taken out of my account so I won't forget to pay them and it works out fine. I actually spend more at Rite Aid than at the mall. I just love shopping n smaller stores with stuff I like. Wilmar can easily wipe out every penny I have in all my accounts in under an hour if I allow myself to buy what I want. I have been TRYING to stay away from certain stores where I get weak and HAVE to have things I don't need.

I don't use credit cards but I am just as guilty buying something when I don't really need it and then wondering where my money went and how I'm going to pay something. During the last year or so I have gotten really good about using the online bill payer thru my credit union and setting the date for bills to be paid so that they go thru right on pay day. That has helped me pay bills and then shop. But in my defense: I don't like to shop. I'll spend more at Wal-Mart in one trip than I would at the mall.

Whew, I thought you found my diary for a minute. I am a shopaholic and my confessions would be pretty interesting. Haha.

This one will definitely make you laugh OR watch Mamma Mia again and have a good laugh fest and tearful moment all in one. Every time I watch Mamma Mia now I think about you and the discussion we had on that a few months ago.

Meri wrote on Mar 8, 2009 at 7:51PM

I haven't heard about this movie but I need a good laugh! Thanks for the recommendation.

It's been in the theaters now for some time so my guess is it will be leaving soon and then go to DVD in June or July.

I haven't even seen a preview for this movie yet. It sounds cute though! Nice review.

This sounds like a good flick AND a good reminder. I'm sticking with one credit card. There's safety in the number One.

Sometimes before I see a movie, I don't like to know too much about it. This sounds like a real winner though!

If you go with your girlfriends I think you will have a blast. Then you can come back and write your own review and we can read each other's ;+) I'm the same way--if I know I'm working on a review I won't read someone else's until I post mine b/c I don't want their thoughts to infiltrate my review. Have a great weekend! I'm signing off--don't forget to set your clocks back before you go to bed!! ~Gigi

This is a great review but I'm going to see the movie this week and will wait until afterward to finish it. Sounds like a winner!
