Memory cards all should last for many years. I've had a couple for four years that are still fine (both are SD) and at least one for five years (a CompactFlash) that still works good.

I'm completely sold on SD memory. It's cheap and you can buy it anywhere. Even the corner drug store and supermarkets sell SD memory chips. CompactFlash is getting scarce, and Memory Stick and xD are proprietary. That makes them hard to find and more expensive. Unfortunately, Sony devices use Memory Stick cards, and that means I won't buy Sony products that use Memory Stick cards. Good thing there are alternatives!

You should be looking for SDHC cards (Greater than 2Gb capacity) since they will offer higher speeds.  In fact, there are ratings for SDHC memory card called "Class" and these have a huge effect on the potential speed of your purchase.

SDHC is definitely the way to go.  Get the highest class you can for seamless non-stuttering video.  If I'm not mistaken that's Class 6 (but don't hold me to it).  If you get an 8GB card and you store your pics as jpeg files you can probably fit all the photos you're likely to take for the rest of your life on it.
