Inappropriate?

I'm tapping the collective wisdom out there. What is the best place, brand, model to look for when buying a new computer? Mine is just about shot and I'm in need of something new soon. I need to keep the price low (thinking ~$300-$400). Any thoughts on websites to check, brands/models to look at? Anything I shouldn't go with?

I would check out Hewlett Packard (www.hp.com). The company offers quality products at the price point you are looking for and there is usually a deal to be had at their on-line store. I would stay away from Best Buy unless you know exactly what you want less you be talked into something you don't need.

i would recomend you to decide what you are going to use it for, so that way you dont end up paying for power and technology that you will never use. Hit me up if you need some advice, it might be to technical, but i can give you an idea of what you could need which then you could use when searching for a computer. Also, shope arround, dont just check the manufactures, sometime retails have discounts that end up being better than buying from factory. I usually check newegg.com, pcclub.com, any manufacture and frys.com

I'm looking as well. Although, I'm willing to shell out up to about 1400.00. I have an HP Pavilion a1213w that was given to me new and it has been ok with a few problems. I've looked at reviews, computer specs, you name it. I would like it to be an easier search. How do you decide based on a few reviews they list for a pc? GRRRRRRR

I'm assuming your monitor is still functional and can be used with the new computer. That being the case you'll have no trouble finding a replacement within your budget. You might want to checkout Tigerdirect.com or circuitcity.com. They are always running specials in the $200-300 range. Also, don't overlook Wal-mart. They offer exclusive deals with Compaq (HP), and eMachines. It doen't sound like you have very heavy-duty requirements.
These days the computer needs of most of us can be satisfied for less than the cost of a decent stereo.

Maybe you should try Dell.com. They have quite a few desktops that are in your price range.

My first desktop was a Dell. Lasted me four years before I had just run it too ragged to do anything but crawl.
Dell is usually a safe bet, their support isn't always that helpful for individual users but they are quality products. My own personal experience is that Gateway and HP tend to get shot faster than Dell products.
Someone mentioned Tigerdirect.com...
Some others are newegg.com & outletpc.com.
For all of those however do NOT use paypal. You WILL end up cancelling your order and having the next few weeks to fume about it.
I actually built my own custom machine for about $480 using outletpc.com.
But assuming you want it out of the box, go Dell.
