I have always used (and prefer to use) regular AOL (not in Internet Explorer) but recently I have had problems with pages opening so slow that the page won't open, or other sites not accepting this browser anymore. I have IE 6 as well. it's ok, I guess, for some things. I just really don't care for IE. It opens up too many pages at once. I have tried to download IE 7 & IE 8 but they won't connect to the internet. I don't have that problem with IE 6. I bought Windows 7 the other day hoping that would give me other options but found out I can't use it because I have a Gateway computer, not enough MB of RAM, and windows aeros not supported. I know this is a lot of info, and probably useless info, but can anyone recommend what I could use for a browser that I might like or that is supported by most sites? Thanks and take care!

I'd recommend you try Firefox.  It's a compact browser that is very quick and may be just what your resource strapped system needs. It's a free download.

You might also want to try Chrome, the free browser from Google.  You can download it from, well, Google.  It has tabs, like I.E., and you can personalize it.

those were my suggestions too. . . should have known the techno God's here would have an answer too! With Chrome though make sure you take time to set extra firewalls and antivirus settings.  With firefox try not to get caught up in all their add ins. . .just setting those can take forever.

The thing I LOVE abouit Firefox are the add-ons.  NoScript in particular is a must have because YOU get to chose what java-script is loaded and that's a good thing since there is a log of java script LOADED with viruses and trojans.  WOT is another great add-on that will keep  you from going to bad sites(web pages that are scams or download maleware, etc), Then there's xmarks that lets you take your bookmarks to any computer with an internet connection...

I like the anti pop-ups add-on too.

Add me to the list of satisfied Mozilla Firefox users...

You can download it at:

Thanks! I did download Firefox the other day and it crashed my computer and I had to reset the computer from the original disk it came with. But the few hours I got to use Firefox I really liked it. Maybe my computer is just to old. Thanks for your input and take care!

Hey Mr Maroon,

Thanks for the information. I did try to download Firefox 3.5 the other day and it worked for a few hours then crashed my system. I really liked what I got to use. I pretty much got everything on there that I wanted and then it crashed. I am trying again! Thanks so much. Take care!

Try Google Chrome!  Its a free download as well, offers tabbed browsing and does not take up nearly as many resources as I.E.

Not to barge into this techno-savvy discussion with a dumb question but I just have to ask -- is that your kitty-kat in your profile picture?  If so, he (or she) is adorable.

Wow. You were using IE 6 still?

You might want to try Firefox (as others here have pointed out).  It's not my default browswer but it is my backup one.

Opera is pretty good too, but I prefer Firefox.

Why did you buy Windows 7 without checking the system requirements?  If your Gateway is somewhat older, it might need memory upgrades and other tweaks before you can ever use Windows 7.

I am using IE6 because the computer crashed and I had to reset it bact to the beginning. Before that happened I did try and use IE 7 & 8 I could use it but it wouldn't connect to the internet. Why did not check the system before getting windows 7? Well, stupid I know, I was frustrated with the computer and had been up for days without sleep trying everything I could to get it to work and it said Windows XP and I thought I'd be ok. I didn't realize there would be a problem with having a Gateway computer. I downloaded Firefox the other day and I loved it, for a few hours, I logged off and when I tried to get back on the system had crashed again! I got it back up and Firefox is doing ok right now. We'll see what happens after I sign off and try to get back on. I will look into the memory upgrade like you suggested. Thanks for all the information. I really appreciate the help! Take care!

I used Google Chrome for a while with decent success. Now I use Firefox. It is just as good as Chrome and possibly a little faster.

I love Firefox but it has been crashing on me badly lately. Like it just poofs and everything is gone and I have to restore it. I get my tabs back but lose any text like if I am writing a review in a review box. I have been so frustrated with Firefox that I have been considering something, anything else. I don't know if it is an add on that is crashing the browser or what but it happens on all of my computers, even my new one with Windows7 just not as often on that one. I have a few add ons but they never caused issues before and I never crashed before. Now, it's a given. It's just a matter of when.

Thank you thank you thank you! I am sorry you have a problem too but I am glad it not just me. I was feeling pretty stupid earlier, even though I got some good information, about not making sure windows 7 would work on ,my computer. I did check the operating system requirements I just didn't check the computer brand. Guess I will know better next time! lol I really like Firefox too.I had gotten everything added on just like I wanted it, got off for a while, came back & it had crashed. I have been literally sitting here non stop since about this time last night getting everything back where it should be. I did download Firefox again but I an scared to stop working in it and leave. It crashed last time I left! lol Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. If I come across a reason or a fix for the crashes I will let you know. Take care!

I have been experiencing Internet Explorer problems for months now.  My page will suddenly close because of an ambiguous IE problem.  As a result from reading the answers on this page, I have started using Firefox and absolutely love it!  It's so much faster than IE, and my page has yet to close!  Thanks to all the suggestions!

I refuse to use IE unless absolutely necessary. I've used Firefox for years. I love it. Works 10x better than IE.

Firefox is absolutely great (http://getfirefox.com) -- It installs in minutes, imports your bookmarks, and allows really great functionality like tabbed browsing (hold down "control" while clicking on a link) and extensions (to add on functionality. Everything from little weather updates in your status bar to blocking banner ads).  Definitely move off IE as soon as possible. You won't regret it!
