 To the Point

After many unsuccessful attempts my mom has stopped smoking. My mom has tried both the cherry and the mint Commit. She buys the 48 lozenge pack for about $29.00.

A Closer View

Commit are lozenges. The lozenges help reduce withdrawal symptoms including nicotine cravings. The ingredients are Nicotine Polacrilex, 4mg (Stop smoking aid). The inactive ingredients are Aspartame, Calcium Polycarbophil, Flavor, and Magnesium Stearate.

I wrote 4 mg though they come in 2 mg formulas. Since my mom smoked within ½ hour of waking up she was told to use the stronger 4 mg.

Commit is a 12-week plan that must be adhered to exactly. When I arrived in Florida I saw my mom had her schedule written down.. She also takes out her lozenges for the day and puts them on a plate so she won’t forget.

Warnings

There are a whole host of warnings. I’ll just list some of the very important ones that may not be obvious.

Do not use if you continue to smoke, chew tobacco, use snuff, or use a nicotine patch or other nicotine-containing products.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are taking prescription medicine for depression or asthma. Your prescription dose may need to be adjusted.

Stop use and ask a doctor if mouth problems occur; persistent indigestion or severe sore throat occurs irregular heartbeat or palpitations occur ; you get symptoms of nicotine overdose such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, weakness and rapid heartbeat.

The Program

You’ll start by using at least 9 lozenges of Commit each day during the first 6 weeks. You will suck on (not chew) 1 every 1 to 2 hours. Weeks 7 to 9 you’ll take 1 every 2 to 4 hours and weeks 10 to 12 you’ll use one every four to eight hours.

The lozenge should slowly dissolve (about 20-30 minutes) in your mouth. You may feel a warm or tingling sensation so move it around in your mouth. You can’t eat or drink 15 minutes before using or while the lozenge is in your mouth

Do not use more than one lozenge at a time or continuously use one lozenge after another since this may cause you hiccups, heartburn, nausea or other side effects. My mom has been using them as directed. I’ve been watching her for 1 week. She occasionally gets hiccups in spite of using as directed.

She didn't hate the taste of them but the taste got better as she got used to them.

Reaction

When my mom first started I spoke to her a lot. She was quite edgy. She told me so and I could hear it in her voice. However she assured me she was alright and was not going to smoke. After several weeks the edginess waned and at this point (On week 7) she claims not to have any cravings. Commit offers a support phone number which she has never used.
