Affordable lodging in charming St. Augustine
Historic St. Augustine should be on everyone's Must-See list. It's a real beauty, with something for everyone in the family, and encourages exploration by foot. If you're willing to walk a few extra blocks, or drive your car to a parking lot to begin your exploration, Comfort Suites Downtown St. Augustine allows you to save an extra $60-$100 per night.
Most of the hotels in the historic district are $150 and up per night. There's a real luxury to walking out your door and ambling down the brick passageways of the city. However, if you're on a budget, you can drive just a few blocks north of the city's famed Castillo, and get a great room for under $100.
Comfort Suites is a reliably good hotel brand for budget travellers and this one has great benefits. Its free breakfast includes all the usual continental items, PLUS a couple of hot items (i.e. eggs and sausage), plus waffle dough and a hot waffle iron.
Rooms at the Comfort Suites Downtown are huge and most have small balconies. The rooms have a sofa and coffee table, desk, microwaves, small fridge, decent mattresses, a large tv, HBO, and free wireless.
If you're on a budget, this hotel is a great choice. The hot tub was neither clean nor hot, but the staff was friendly and there was a tiny grocery store in the lobby, which offered a few Lean Cuisines, some Top Ramen, cold drinks, candy and snacks.
Libby's Hot Tip: If the hotel's wireless doesn't work, try one of the other networks. I was able to get on using an alternative.
