If only there were an alternative

Comcast's physical infrastructure is capable of the fastest internet available to most consumers. The nearest competitor is Verison's FIOS, which maxes out at 30Meg/sec and is a very small network, not available to most. Comcast uses DOCSIS 2 and will be implementing DOCSIS 3. DOCSIS 2 tops out at 48Meg/sec and DOCSIS 3 will be capable of 343Meg/sec. The fastest DSL can offer is 24Meg/sec (ADSL2+).

The gist of the this is that Comcast technically has the best product out there. However Comcast does not dominate the market by far. DSL providers are strong competition. You might wonder why?

Horrible customer service, poorly thought out polices, and a string of embarrassing public relations snafus (http://consumerist.com/search/comcast/) compounded by the fact that their executives don't seem to care have given technically poorer technologies a solid customer base.

What does all this mean to you?

If you are technically competent or even literate you may want to take advantage of the superior technology. I personally am a tech industry worker, and I haven't had any problems. But my recommendation is that once you have any issue use leaving them as leverage with customer service and if you are not taken care of, leave them. If your not on superior technical footing with the CSR (which isn't hard) it isn't worth your time.

Use Comcast, if it causes you problems, switch to DSL.
