I must rank myself in the league of thousands of other people who can get no reception at all without cable service. If you want to watch the tube in the town where I live, (unless you have an antenna or want to climb up on the roof and attach a satellite dish), you are automatically a Comcast customer.
I will say that in a lot of ways Comcast has done a good job, providing a good variety of channels and (in my own area at least) a not-unrespectable assortment of HD channels. On those occasions when Comcast personnel came to my home, they were conscientious about being on time and did an expert job. Alas, for the mysterious lapses in service which occur every now and then! You might as well save your time and effort calling Customer Service to ask what is happening -- as often as not, they are hundreds of miles away and haven't got a clue that there is even a problem. Sometimes service will pick up again hours later with never an explanation as to what the problem was.
I enjoy the cable service provided by Comcast very much but it is way too costly. After the conclusion of a recent special trial package of HBO and Cinemax, my monthly bill shot up to $100 and I phoned Comcast to tell them I would have to discontinue my premium channels now that I am on a fixed income. Behold: I got a better deal because of the fact that I have been a customer "since 1983" (when I first signed on for cable service with another company long ago taken over by Comcast). Now I'm getting HBO, Cinemax, Encore, and I don't know how many other extra things for only $60 a month (including fees and taxes). The deal on the premium channels will end in June but the other special discounts will continue through the end of the year.
I certainly appreciate this deal and the fact that Comcast appreciates those of us who have been customers since 1983 -- on the other hand, the fact remains that if I hadn't phoned them to cancel something, I would probably have had to go right on paying $100 a month which I think is a tad MUCH.
