Colonoscopy Procedure —

I think MOST people hear the words colonoscopy procedure and cringe. However, I have to say, had I not let my fear get in the way, I would have not had to go through what I have! I knew something wasn't quite right in my digestive tract, but the fear of finding out overweighed the actual finding out! As a result I ended up in emergency surgery because of intestinal rupture from diverticulitis. Had I had a colonoscopy beforehand I could have changed a few diet behaviors and not had to endure the rest! Because of the rupture, they ended up removing 18 inches of my intestines and putting me on a TEMP. colostomy bag. (THANK GOD they can now reverse those)!! So the once feared colonoscopy was  vital in reversing that..but now they had to go through the stoma in my stomach instead of anal. Even at that, I couldnt believe it wasnt bad at all! The worse part of it was the preparation the day and night before...and since I was on a colostomy bag it was worse I think. However, after the procedure, they found they could reverse this! Having a colostomy, you can NOT control gasses..so therefore I had no buildup afterwards or pain from that. But after reversal, I had to once again have another colonoscopy( this time anal) and it also was not bad at all. I think I had more pain afterwards from gas than the first time, but if you just relax and let nature do its job, that too goes away in time!

This is a feared procedure for no reason..it truly can save your life!!!

I read the comments here and have a question for anyone. I slipped and fell and ripped my colon. I had to have emegerency surgery, and a my about 3/4 " of my colon was removed and a stoma placed and I now have a colonostomy bag. The surgeon who did the emergency operation told me soon after I left the hospital that it could be reversed. Due to financial conditions, I had to change doctors and hospitals. The surgeon I now have tells me the reversal is a very risky operation, I am overweight and asked the doctor if my weight was a problem. The answer was no, that the reversal is risky even for a thin person. What is going on? Friends tell me to get a second opinion, this is a second opinion of sorts. I am due to get a colonoscopy soon. Is that proper procedure before a final determination of reversal. Please Help. bgjr

I know that you want that reversal as soon as possible...believe me I felt the same way..but if you do have a cold they might want to postpone it a few days..and although that isnt what you want...it might keep you from ending up with respiratory problems or since your immune system is down a bit..possibly infection..so would be worth the wait there as well! I pray that your cold goes away and that is scheduled runs right on time! Take care of yourself...this will be over with before you know it..and you wont believe how much better you feel afterwards! :-)

Hi - I meant I was having a colonoscopy on Monday -lol. Thank you for your input and insight on this. I'm kind of nervous. Starting my clear liquids right now as I type and will be taking the Phospho soda and prep stuff soon. My only concern is that I feel that I'm coming down with a cold so I have been taking extra Vitamen C and drinkiing extra fluids. i don't believe it will be a factor in the colonoscopy procedure as long as I don't have a temp but I'm worried when surgery day approaches this Wed. the doctor might postpone it. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again.

Hi...I believe that they scope all the way down into the rectum even if they go thru the stoma..so probably the need for the enemas as well! I koow I had to drink that qt of stuff plus strong laxatives on top of that then the enema! I didnt think that there would be anything for the enema to do..but was shocked that I actually had bowel movement that way too..of course not near like the cleaning thru the stoma though! I'm sorry you have to go thru this..but if they are reversing the colostomy it is WELL worth it! Good luck and God bless ya!!

Hi - I also have a colostomy bag and am going to have a colonoscopy tomorrow; question is why are they having me do enemas also if they are going through the stoma? It just dawned on me now.....I'm asuuming that they are going through both ways. Doctor plans on having surgery on Wen.if all goes well.
