I bought the package of putty for about $5 from an online merchant (it's also available at Amazon.com). The light beige compound comes in small package that contains 2.64 ounces of the product. I opened the package, grabbed a small chunk, and rolled it into several small balls. I then put about three balls of putty on the bottom of my figurine, and pressed it down onto the shelf with a slight twisting motion. I tested it by dusting it and attempting to scoot it over, but the object was stuck in place and rendered immovable. Incredibly, the only time it moved is when I intentionally gripped the figurine with a twisting action and pulled up on it. The Museum Putty holds the object securely in place, but at the same time, it's easy to remove when you need to.
I've tried the putty on items that I've attached to wood shelves (both natural and painted), and windowsills. The only problem that I've had with the product is that when I removed an item from the windowsill, the putty didn't come off as easily as it did on the shelves. I ended up having to scrape off the remaining pieces and I made a few small gouges in the sill in the process. Suffice it to say, I won't be using the putty on the windowsill again.
Overall, Collectors Hold Museum Putty is a great product that I would recommend to anyone who is worried about a family heirloom or collectible being accidentally knocked down and broken. One package will secure over 40 items, and it works on plates, glassware, statues, vases, pottery, and more. The package even suggests that the putty will protect against theft and earthquake! For glassware and items placed on glass shelves, also a 4-ounce clear gel available which provides the same benefits as the putty, but in an invisible gel formula.
