With toothbrushes, consumers are offered two basic categories from which to choose: Manual and Electric, with many variations on these two main categories. Over the years, I have stuck with manual toothbrushes, but it is common nowadays to find me with two toothbrushes; one manual and one electric. And the electric toothbrush that I have owned for a few months is the Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush, a vibrating toothbrush.

Toothbrush Commentary:

The Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush features a curvy body and a large handle that is ergonomically designed to make it easy to hold. The handle also includes a thumb grip area in the middle designed to make the toothbrush easier to control. Also located in the center of the handle are two push buttons that are depressed to start/end the vibrating action.

The brush of the Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush is different from most other toothbrushes. It features three areas of polishing caps (circular bristles) that are designed to gently remove stains. Around the edges of the toothbrush head are curved sections of raised bristles that help to clean harder to reach areas. These are enclosed by multi- functional bristles that help to remove additional plaque between teeth and along the gum line.

Besides its use as a toothbrush, the Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush also offers a tongue and cheek cleaner. These cleaners are comprised of dozens of small, rubber/plastic tips that massage and clean the inside of your cheeks as you brush the sides of your molars. The same can be said for the tongue cleaner. With the vibration turned on, this cleaner effectively cleans the tongue, eliminating odor and disease causing bacteria through its 20,000 strokes per minute.

Toothbrushes are one of several products I like to experiment with and it is rare that I purchase the same toothbrush twice in a row. Manual toothbrushes are usually the type I select, but I also select electric every now and then. At present, I own both a manual and an electric toothbrush and I have been using the Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush for a couple of months now. From my experience, the Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush is a very good toothbrush that delivers an above- average level of cleaning. The sonic action is very effective at cleaning the teeth and where I notice the greatest difference is the area of the teeth right at the gum line. The Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush has slightly extended bristles on the edges and these help to clean at and even above the gum line for the best cleaning possible. Compared to the cleaning ability of a manual toothbrush, I can see and feel a noticeable difference when I brush with the Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush.

The Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush likes to promote its built- in cheek and tongue cleaners but this feature isn't as great as the manufacturer claims. Yes, it does offer some nice massaging action on the cheeks as you brush, but to be honest I don't even notice it very much. The main reason is because this isn't a separate, motorized or unique type of cleaner. It is nothing more than the backside of the brush with raised "bumps". It performs its cleaning action in the background, while you brush your teeth.

The Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush is a very good brush overall, but if I had to find a few faults, I can come up with only two: Its tendency to make the gums bleed and the short battery life. If you have hypersensitive gums, there is a good chance the Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush will make your gums gush with blood due to the vibration and pressure placed on the gums. Even if you don't have sensitive gums, you will still notice some bleeding, partly due to the vibrating action and partly due to the medium hardness level of the bristles. Then, there is the issue with short battery life. Depending on how often you brush and for how long, the AAA battery may not last very long. Mine had to be replaced after only six weeks of usage and it is now close to needing another replacement.

Bottom Line Viewpoint:

In spite of its tendency to cause bleeding and short battery life, the Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush is a very good toothbrush for daily cleaning. Clinical studies have proven the Colgate 360 Sonic Power Toothbrush is superior to the leading manual toothbrushes for removing plaque and for a price of only about six dollars per toothbrush, this is certainly an electric toothbrush worth trying.

Great review. I like power toothbrushes because you brush like you normally do and then the brush is also moving so it's like twice the cleaning.

I tried this but people with ear issues shouldn't really use anything that vibrates or whatever on their teeth. It could cause dizziness. Weird but true! I liked it though but don't want to chance it.

I wonder if they make toothbrushes that you can just plug in. I tend to go with the manual ones--I could just see my girls with one that spins...

Very good review!! I have seen these before and wondered if they were any good. I have the Crest Spin Brush and the batteries don't last long in it either. It is an OK toothbrush, but I may toss it and get me the Colgate 360. Thanks!
