While I don't think the Coleman Rest Easy Sleeping Pad is all that comfortable, it does provide some cushioning when your camping and that's pretty much what any camping pad will do. This pad is a closed-cell foam pad that is light and easy to pack and will insulate you from the cold, wet and or damp ground and won't get wet itself.

Coleman's pad is green and is about 24 inches wide (2 feet), about 72 inches long (6 feet), and weighs in at about 2/3 of a pound. The pad is made out of a dense, closed-cell foam material that does not absorb water and proves to be a decent insulative barrier between your body and the ground beneath you. The dense foam also provides a certain amount of cushioning. I've always found the pad is most comfortable when you sleep on your back and don't roll over on your side since my weight is distributed more evenly on my back. If you do tend to sleep on your side though, the foam tends to be not thick enough to really provide much cushioning. I've woken up in the middle of the night with my arm asleep from being crushed on the pad.

One nice thing about this Coleman Pad is that it's one of the less expensive foam pads and you can find them almost anywhere. Since the foam pad is made from dense foam, when it's time to roll it up and pack it away for the day's hike, they will not compress much, if at all. With a tight roll, you can get these pads down to a cylinder that is about 2 feet long and about 8 inches or so in diameter.

I still use my Coleman pad from time to time, especially now as a first layer when we are car camping. I'll also take it hiking from time to time or loan it out to others who need a camping pad. I've also picked up these pads on trips where I haven't wanted my self-inflating pad to travel through baggage at the airport when I've gotten to where I'm going.

I don't find these pads to be super comfortable, but they are better than sleeping directly on the ground. There's enough cushioning for me to sleep okay on my back, but on my side, I tend to get sore.

My Take

The Rest Easy Sleeping Pad from Coleman does a good job at providing a basic sleeping surface for a camper, it's just not all that comfortable.

My back hurts thinking about it. I'm such a diva.

In response to vivasuzi's comment from Jul 31, 2009 at 11:00AM:

It's thin - I don't mind it when I'm backpacking, but other times when weight and bulk don't matter, I go for something thicker.

Doesn't sound like enough cushioning for me! Thanks for sharing :)
