Intro
Cold Case is one of those shows that I don't set out to watch, but every time it ends up on my TV by default I end up waiting it, to the point of instant replaying it to get parts I missed when I was out of the room. Since The Amazing Race was moved to Sundays, it has the time slot right before Cold Case and after 60 Minutes. Late-ending sports games on CBS, usually football, push 60 MInutes to start ten, twenty, thirty minutes later, meaning everything else is off just that much as well. I tune in to watch The Amazing Race and catch the end of 60 Minutes. If Andy Rooney is on, I know I don't have to wait that long, and if he's not, I know I've got time to put in a load of laundry or something. This means to be sure I get all of the show, I have to TiVo both The Amazing Race and Cold Case, just to be sure. The problem with this is I end up then getting into the beginning of Cold Case, and if I'm watching awhile after the show ended, I miss the ending of Cold Case as it would be on the hour scheduled for Without a Trace.

The Plot
Such a thing happened tonight, as I never got to find out what happened to the Japanese-American man that was killed during World War II. Lots of suspects, but that was really one Cold Case, over sixty years. The show covers a police investigative unit that tackles cold cases, usually with something or another bringing the case to everyone's minds again. The beginning of the episode will show a snippet of the actual crime, but not enough for us to see whodunit. We then skip ahead to modern day while the investigators begin piecing together the old crime. They interview people that were connected years ago, and the camera will flash back to how those people looked back then, then back to how they look years later. By the end, they of course solve the crime, usually a murder, but before they do, the plot takes many twists and turns as we get to play along trying to figure out the whodunit. What adds to it all is when they go back to the time the crime was committed, the music in the background is always from that era. The cases that are only a few years old are no big deal, but there was a  recent episode where the crime was committed in 1986, and the music was great, not to mention the fact that the overall flavor and some of the ideas of the episode seemed to be right out of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, complete with a mall, older man, food court, etc.

The Stars
Star Kathryn Morris  plays one of the lead investigators, and while I enjoy her on the show, I'm always bothered by that soft light they film her in, similar to the one once used on Cybill Shepherd in Moonlighting. It makes you wonder what they're hiding. With Shepherd it was of course her age and wrinkles, but Morris doesn't seem that old. Her character always seems very empathetic to the cases, as does that of Danny Pino, while Jeremy Ratchford seems to be around for the comic relief of it all.  John Finn and Thom Barry seem to be around just to add a little stuffiness.

Conclusion

Somehow I've found myself watching Cold Case even when it's not only starting as something else is getting over. My TiVo is picking up other showings of it on CBS, such as late nights, and I've found myself watching the episodes. I became a fan somehow, apparently.

I always thought she was just very pale. I love this show and I do tape it but last night I watched it right after I taped it. I usually can't wait! Jo

I'm the same way: I catch this program once in a while, but when I do, it's always captivating. (Too bad I don't have Tivo.)
