I've written before about another Colassal product (their cool, giant MP3 player.) this time, I'm back with a rave about their giant remote control. I go thtis for my mom who, as some of you already know, is legally blind.
Colassal seems to be a brand exclusive Walgreen's, and their products are all reasonably priced. Cheap, even. This only cost me $10, and it works great. It comes with a list of popular tv brands and matching codes, and is pretty much a universal remote. Once you've matched your tv to the proper code, getting the remote synched with your tv takes about five seconds, no lie. And it doesn't just run your tv, but your dvd player, cable - the whole shebang. All for $10.
Of course, the real draw is the size. This thing is about as wide as the average DVD box, and about twice as long. So, yeah...it lives up to the brand name. Which, for some people, may seem silly. For someone with low vision, though, it's a real convenience. It means never losing the remote and never having to struggle to figure out which button to press.
If you get a new tv or want to use it on a different set, switching over is a breeze. Again, only about five seconds and it's synched up. When my mother recntly stayed at an in-patient physical rehab facility, I packed her Collasal remote and synched it up to the tv in her room in no time. If the code to your tv isn't included in the massive code list, there are codes listed on various sites online.
Brookstone sells a giant remote that looks exactly like this one. In fact, I bet they're made in the same factory. Brookstone sells theirs for $30+, and I can't magine it's any better. My mom has had hers for going on two years, now, and it's still going strong.
