A toasts, a taste and a stroll down Coca-Cola memory lane.

thirsty, prefer Coke over Pepsi

I'm not a soft drink person.  I love sweet tea and I will drink the Lipton's Green Tea with Citrus.  But sometimes I am in the mood for a soft drink and I want nothing more than the Classic Coke.  I will not drink Pepsi.  I'm not a water drinker either but I will drink water any day before I will drink Pepsi.

Last night I was in Wal-Mart and saw a bin with the holiday Cokes in it.  They are little 13.5 oz. bottles with Santa and the polar bear.  The little round shape make them look like Christmas ornaments.  I just had to have one.  It was only $1.00 and too cute to pass by.

I researched the history of Coke because I knew a little bit of trivia that I wanted to put in my review.  Coca-Cola got its name because it was originally believed back during the days of prohibition that the drink had a slight trace of cocaine in it but it was considered for medicinal purposes.  A man named Pemberton had to fight for the right to bottle this product because it was considered a banned and evil thing for society to get their hands on.

Initially they were only allowed to sell Coke through soda fountains because lawmakers believed this was a way of controlling how much could be consumed.  As the years passed and more people began to protest for the right to buy it it was released to the public.  The classic contoured, skirted bottle was birthed.

The first bottling company for Coca-Cola was built in Chattanooga, TN in 1899.  You see that MikeMaroon and LisaCarey?  We have another claim to fame.  The contoured bottle was a result of someone saying the drink could quench your thirst like a woman could satisfy a man.  Thus, the hourglass shape and the bottomed-skirt was to resemble the hemline of a lady's dress.  Did you know that?

One day I was reading the history of the Coke products on the back of a nostalgic Coke case.  Have you ever wondered why Coke uses Santa in its holiday products?  One of their bottle designs was released on Christmas day in the early 19th century and to celebrate the birth of the new bottle they coupled it with Santa.

Coca-Cola said they will not allow a child under age 12 to be in any of their commercials because there have been too many accusations about the issues of childhood obesity and ADD/ADHD.  Coke says they know that young people are a big consumer of their products but they will not run the risk of negative propaganda.

The holiday Christmas Coca-Cola ball contains the original formula and says it is very low in sodium.

Nutrition Facts for 1 bottle (13.5 fl oz)

  • Calories: 160
  • Fat: 0
  • Sodium: 50mg
  • Total Carbs: 44g (ouch!)
  • Sugars: 44g
  • Protein: 0g

Okay, so Coke isn't the healthiest beverage on the market but it sure does taste good!  So, have a Coke and a smile.  I hope you enjoy the pictures of my other Coke bottles and products.

I prefer Pepsi over Coke, but I liked your review :) I'm old enough to remember Coke machines that sold it in glass bottles and it was nice and cold. It seems like most machine now only chill it a little bit.

Cool! . . . I notice that Coca Cola has a more sweet taste, where Pepsi has a more tangy taste; I prefer the sweetness of Coke.

Gigi, you will get a kick out of this. I was born and raised in the south. Most people in the south drink Coca-Cola, right! Well, not me, I prefer Pepsi. My family teases me that I'm not really from the south. I will drink Coca-Cola, but if given the choice I would pick Pepsi. Coca-Cola is just too sweet for me, I guess! Please, Please do NOT gang up on me!!!!!! ;-) ~Krista Lynn

I am old enough to remember and surely do miss the old soda fountains and the wonderful treats they used to purvey for tired shoppers or neighborhood office workers. The most fantastic ice cream creations and also great sandwiches and burgers too. I really enjoyed Gigi's great Coca-Cola review and learned a lot from it. Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving and it was nice to "meet" you!

That's very interesting about the soda fountain shops. I never knew that. Shelton's parents still have an old-timey soda shop in his hometown. We'll have to pass that information along to them. From one Anna to another--have a great day.

P.S.
My husband Shelton and I both write under Writersquill so we usually try to put our name beside the comment so people will know who is responding.

Gigi, I loved this review and thought the pictures of some of your collectibles was cute. Hmm..now I think I know what I can get you for Christmas ;+)

Hmm...cocaine in the Classic Coke--is that why you used to tell the doctors you had a buzz and felt woozy when they would try to get you to eat. That's it--you had too much Coke ;+)

Have a Coke and a smile! Love, Anna

I have the same dilemma. I won't be able to keep them all because the children will want them. But I'm wondering if I will try to hold on to at least one or two. I wonder if they have other colors like green for Sprite and so forth? ~Anna

jasyjen wrote on Nov 30, 2008 at 1:19PM

YES! I bought some of these myself. I can't decide if I want to open them or save them for a collector's item. Aren't they too cute? (by the way, you drink the EXACT SAME drinks I do!) ;-)

AnnaBanana wrote on Nov 30, 2008 at 12:59PM

Yes, this is a great review and I love the pictures as well. There is a lot of good research here. Another thing I heard about Coke was that -- because it really DID have cocaine in it at first -- sometimes people got a little dizzy from it especially if they had not eaten for a while before drinking it and that that was why seats came to be installed by drug store soda fountains so that people could be safely seated as they sipped their Cokes! I must compliment you on your adorable snow-people profile picture also.

Yes, we lived in Gwinnett County [north of Atlanta].
That is a super cool story. Thanks for sharing it.

That is too cool! Were you living in Atlanta during 1996? The reason I ask: They hosted the Country Music Festival that summer at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. It was the same time as the Olympics so there was a lot going on. Anyway, my brother got tickets for the CMF and so while there my gymnastics coach contacted me and let me know that she had secured passes for us to meet the Romanian team. We went up to the condos over the speedway and had dinner with a group of girls. Bela and Marta Karoli were there and acted as interpreters. After dinner a group of the girls along with the Karolis went down to the CMF with us. My brother, me and they gymnasts were all on TNN, Entertainment Tonight and the Chicago Network.

My sentiments exactly, about Classic Coke versus Pepsi. Now my mother, she preferred Pepsi but would buy whichever was on sale. Me--Coke or nothing.

Yeah, you can be a southern girl too ;+)

I have visited the World of Coca-Cola. If you look at one of the bottles you will see the caption. I went to the '96 Olympics in Atlanta and while vacationing we went to the World of Coca-Cola and the underground Atlanta. I didn't care for many of the beverages but I loved the way they shot out of the tubes and into the cups. Perhaps I should revisit when I have some money to spend because I'm sure I could get a lot of stuff for my vintage Coke kitchen from their gift shop. Wonderful idea--go online and check out the store! yay me ;+) ~Gigi

We used to live in Atlanta. If you ever get there be sure to visit The World of Coca-Cola. They have "Coke" flavors from all over the world. A must see. ;-)

That's funny, because I can't stand Cherry Pepsi. If I can't get Cherry Coke, I'll get Classic Coke before I touch Pepsi. In fact, I'll usually chose Iced Tea, if a restaurant only has Pepsi beverages. When I was a kid, I wasn't so picky about soda, but now I can totally taste the difference and I'm a Coca Cola girl! . . . Does that mean I miight be a designated southern goddess? After all, I am from Southern Cali!?! ;oP

In response to Meri's comment from Nov 29, 2008 at 7:54PM:

I was telling Chrissy that most of the initial Coke production took place in Chattanooga and Atlanta so it really is a southern drink. I don't hardly ever drink it but there are some restaurants that make nasty tea and I will have to opt for Coke. If they sell Pepsi I will opt for the Sprite or Sierra Mist. The bottle is cute. I haven't opened mine yet because I want to take it to work with me. I am the "cute one" or "Little bit" at the office so people will think the bottle is just part of my character. ~Gigi

My mother loves cherry Pepsi. I won't drink anything but the Classic Coke, none of the others. I would love to get back that information on the Santa and the Coke Bottle. I've never seen the show you are talking about but I would love to see it if it came anywhere close to discussing all I read on the Internet. That was some pretty interesting facts about Coke. And most of the initial production took place in Chattanooga and Atlanta so Coke must be a drink for the southern gods and goddesses ;+)

Meri wrote on Nov 29, 2008 at 7:54PM

I am a Coke drinker as well. Upstate New York is Pepsi country. When I find a place that serves Coke I make a point to go there over another one. These ornament bottles are simply adorable.

cmohr80 wrote on Nov 29, 2008 at 6:24PM

Have you seen the Hstory Channel's "Modern Marvels: Coca Cola?" An interesting show! Cherry Coke is a vice of mine. I try so hard to stay away, but often the taste calls to me. ;O)

Good info about Coke. Thanks now where did I put my Budweiser? :o
