Cobra's recent XRS-9950 Radar Detector is really a great unit and while it's usual market price of $159.00 or so was high, even for such an advanced model, I got it on a clearance sale at autothing.com which had it for about $99.95. Even with the autothing.com price, I also got free S&H, so you now know the floor-price for this unit if you can find a similar deal.
The unit is a mix of faux-chrome, gray and charcoal colored plastics. The color LCD screen is really impressive and functions like a GPS device, but truly it's just a compass in terms of mapping abilities. The sound effects are great and while the automated voice function (robotic female) is neat, it starts unexpectedly and the stops mid-sentence depending on the occasion.
As for detecting radar, I don't believe it's better than cheaper models, but it presents such revelations (police activity) in a much nicer package than most Cobra or competing models. It's a bit on the heavy side too, so make sure the included suction cup bracket is firmly mounted and press the suction cups in on a weekly basis or the unit's weight will cause it to fall onto your dashboard or worse, onto the center console where it could break if the drop is far.
