Coastal Scents African black soap —

I'm a big exfoliator.  Ever since my teens, when I used to read Clinique ads (in my opinion, the best ad and package copy ever), and learned the considerable virtues of salicylic acid specifically and exfoliation in general, I scrubbed, sloughed and clarified my way through life.

Then menopause hit, and weirdly, made my face all rough.  A friend (who meant well, I'm sure...?) commented on one of my pictures, saying "I have a friend with rough skin, too.  It comes from certain prescription drugs.  Have you looked into that?"  Well, thanky kindly, I wanted to say, but I didn't even notice my skin had a problem.

I swallowed my pride and examined the photos again.  Well, I'll be; I had grown a little sandpapery.  So I decided to step up the exfoliation, but scout around for new methods and products.  My favorite resource was YouTube.  There, I discovered things like the aspirin mask, which did clear away a lot of the dulling debris (and it's cheap, too!).

A frequent banner ad next to beauty videos is for a company called Coastal Scents.  Lured by the photo of the 88-hued eyeshadow palette, I went over to have a look.

Very cool company.  One product, African black soap, earned rave reviews.  And I mean, scores of them.  So I tried it.

I received what can only be described as a gigantic blob of speckly, natural-soapy-smelling, semi-soft soap.  I broke off a piece to use over the course of about a week and washed.

It took about three nights, but by the third, I noticed after (copious) rinsing that when I ran my wet fingers over my wet skin, it squeaked like rubber!  Yet after I dried, my face felt clean and smooth, but not dry at all.  WOW!  The best of both worlds:  Super clean, but with the natural oils untouched.

As for the blob, it'll last for quite a long time.  At $13 for what will probably last for months, it's a bargain.  (Best part:  The women in a small village in Ghana make this by hand, so everyone benefits.)
