I would love some suggestions from all of you gals out there who sport the larger sizes: where do you find your clothing steals and deals?  What stores carry items that make you feel sexy and hip?

I have always refused to succumb to the sloppy tee-shirt and sweats routine that seems to happen to mama's after they have their kiddos and plump up a bit.  Of course, I've always been a bigger gal, so maybe I'm just used to it.  I like:

  • Old Navy: sometimes I can fit into some of their larger sizes but I have never tried their actual Plus-sized or "Women's" line.  If you have, what do you think?  Do the items fit decently, or are they baggy/square?
  • Torrid.com/Stores: I have tried on their tops and liked them but thought their dresses fit a bit too "junior-y" for my taste.
  • Target - sometimes they have cute things, sometimes their stuff is awful.  I have very cute jeans and a cute pencil skirt from Mossimo
  • TJ Maxx - This is my favorite place to get higher-end brands without shelling out all the dough; as a broke mama, this is the place to do it!
  • Ross or Marshalls - Not as high-end or well kept as TJs... therefore my second choice for mark-downs.
  • Lane Bryant - Can't beat their figure flattering cuts - they have this amazing pants system, RED/YELLOW/BLUE for different figure shapes and for the first time, I can get the petite leg length in pants that I need without having the rise in the crotch so dang tight!  I love their clearance sales a semi-annual bra deals.
What about you guys??

I gotta agree with you -- torrid for hot and spicy stuff and Lane Bryant. It is funny, I live close to three of those and I find different things at each one. It is sort of like the availability of shopping online AND being able to try clothes on. I admit, the Lane Bryant jeans right fit are amazing -- I actually had a lady tell me she liked my JEANS the other day while Christmas shopping! They are the right fit "trouser" jeans and so versatile I may never buy another pair again. they actually do FIT RIGHT. Not to mention the Gift Checks I get for having a credit card with them, the coupons and clearance sales! I was there before Cmas and bought the leather coat, jeans, shirts, pjs, bras, panties and when I was done with buy one get ones, my coupons and the gift certificate I had been holding onto I still only spent the price of the coat! Old Navy is "ok" but to be honest, I don't think they are complimentary to larger sizes, and I am a little old to try some of their styles.

I think that Lane Bryant bras are the best - I don't even bother looking anywhere else anymore.

Have you ever bought underwear at Torrid?  Their panties always look so cute but I wondered how they fit.

I was in Dress Barn awhile ago and noticed a whole women's section. Their prices are usually very good and welcome;)

Fashion Bug also has a womens section -- but the clothes are rather cheaply made. I haven't been to one since I moved there isn't one nearby and while it was ok for a quick blouse or something I couldn't do much shopping there for solid items that I would want to wear for a long time.

I'm short, round, and curvy so shopping for me is just awful.  I shop almost exclusively at Fashion Bug as the price is usually right and their stuff seems to fit me pretty good all around, even in the arms which are usually too long in other stores' plus sizes. I have their credit card so they're always sending me coupons and I save lots of money.  They recently closed most of the stores around me so it's getting harder and harder to find clothes.  I hope they don't close up all together.

Once in a while I go to Lane Bryant or Avenue but they are much more expensive and the legs and sleeves never fit me right and I look like I'm wearing big and tall clothes only I'm not tall.  I do buy all my bras at LB though.

I also hit Torrid once in a while too but also find them very expensive for what I get and the sizing is very inconsistent.  I recently bought a bunch of shirts online from Torrid all in the same size.  A third of them fit fine, a third were too tight, and a third were too big.

I never find anything I like at Target so I've stopped shopping there and Old Navy has discontinued their plus size line in my area so I have to shop online for plus size stuff from them. That said, last summer I bought a few polos from Old Navy online and they fit really nicely.  Long enough to cover my hips but nipped in a little at the waist and really cute.  Unfortunately they didn't sell them again this year.

I also buy Denim & Co on QVC once in a while as the sizing is pretty consistent.

I think I have to agree w/ Lane Bryant.  Also, I have been able to find clothes that are actually STYLISH at Kohl's Plus Size Department.  WHY is it that all plus size clothes are made for women that are TEN FEET tall????  That is a pet peeve of mine.  I'm normal height and I don't want to wear things that hang down to my knees!  '-)

Thank you all for your great tips!

Buggheart: I am willing to splurge(ish) on two things - Bras (which is why all mine are from LB) and JEANS.  Please, please, please if you haven't checked out "Right Fit" at Lane Bryant, do.  I am 5'4, with a long torso, and super short legs.  To have super short legs for a 5'4 person.... well, my legs pretty much could lend a supporting role to someone singing, "We represent the lollipop guild."  LOL

Jasyjen - I have NEVER checked out Kohl's plus sizes!  I shall have to do that!  We def. have a local Kohls that I have not taken advantage of ;)

I buy all my bras at LB too.  I found some nice ones from their Cacique line that hold up line nothing else I've ever worn. I can even machine wash and dry them and they come out fine. I have a few that I've had for years and the wires have never poked out on me.  I've never been that lucky with any bra.  I have tried the Right Fit jeans at Fashion Bug and really like those. I found one style of the LB ones that I liked but they didn't have my size in short length so I was out of luck there.

I get a lot of my stuff online.  justmysize.com   Only problem:  even large size makers don't believe large women want anything with a little flash.  Ever notice it's dark colors, white lingerie, very few matching bra/pany sets.  I'm ready to buy all white and some dye.  I also check out the men's department.  Anyone else old enough to remember boy cut jeans?  Popular when hip-huggers came out.

i go for the "trouser cut" yes, I am a bigger size, but I am also tall so I need long lines and so often it seems that designers think bigger women are either short and dumpy or giants. So hard to find the right length. I also like to switch up the look with shoes and the trouser cut jeans allow me to do that.

That's where I buy mine too.  They are made so well!

Ok, girls. I need help! I need ideas on where to shop for plus size career wear -- either pant suit or knee-length skirt suits. I'm talking high-powered big bucks job where I need to dress to impress without looking like a hooker OR my grandmother. I've found the site for the shoes (endless.com), but need to find the outfit first. I've tried: Lane Bryant, Target, Roaman's, Jessica London, Torrid, Dillard's, JCPenny, Sears, Nordstrom's, Kohl's...and I'm sure others, but anything that jumped out at me either wasn't in my size or wasn't the right color. Please help!

Do you have a Cato where you live? It is absolutely my favorite store and they always have great denim skirts, the long ones, not hooker skirts!

I used to have a Cato which was great fun for just out and about wear but no longer have one near me.

did you try tjmaxx or marshalls -- with some searching you can find great name brands there.

i am surprised that you didn't find anything at LB I used to do all my career wear shopping there and my sister still does.

try LB online see if there is anything there you like- also I suggest the trouser cut great for business wear and you can wear any kind of shoe with it and it looks great.

I also find a lot of stuff at Kmart.  Popped in there last week for a t-shirt my mom mentioned and walked out with the t-shirt and about 6 other clothing items.  I have really good luck there and the prices are right.   Another store I recently learned about is called Ashley Stewart.  Very cute, very stylish, a little on the pricey side (keep in mind though that I'm a total cheapskate) but nice stuff.  I didn't buy anything though as they didn't have anything left for short, round chicks, just tall round chicks :)

I shop the sale racks in the Women's dept. at Macy's. I especially love their INC line. The clothes wash well and are of high quality. If you buy them off season you can get great deals!
