You know the drill.

Your special someone asks you if something makes her butt look big or makes her look fat or doesn't look good on her.

If the truth is that she is wearing something wrong, wrong wrong, what do you say?

Mr. Pitcherday always tells the truth about something looking bad. It can work the opposite way too, though when he tells me something looks fine that I think I can't pull off. I'll believe him and wear it. I prefer the honesty, even though I really appreciated the lie about not noticing the 15 lbs I gained between when I purchased my wedding gown and when I wore it. Even HE knows when prudence is required!

As a woman, I want to know if I look bad.  However, I want to be told tactfully.  Instead of saying, "Yes, it makes you look fat," it's far better to say, "That other such-and-such item looks better on you than this one does."  Always accentuate the positive.  No one wants to go out of the house looking bad, but no one wants to be flat-out told that they look fat or horrible either.  Just use tact.

I'm amazed at the many guys on here who say there is no right answer.  Do you guys really think that?  Are you really that afraid of us women?  Any woman who treats you that badly and instills that much fear isn't worth it.  Most of us really do want the truth, we just want it in a nice and HELPFUL way.

Amen to that, Katran

Loved kKatran's response and agree fully. I don't want anyone to let me leave the house looking badly when they could nicely say I look better in something else.

Lately my husband has gotten better about telling the truth when I ask. He sees I don't get upset when he says he doesn't like a particular top or whatever. Usually he has reasons for not liking it like it doesn't look good on me or he feels it shows too much skin. I have to prod a little but he finally tells me and, if I agree, I change. I'm happy when he says I would look better in a different top/outfit. I need an objective opinion!

I was dying reading some of the responses on the board...my husband SAYS he'll tell me honestly what he thinks, and he sometimes does, but more often than not, he plays it safe and says, "It's OK," or "You look alright" when I ask what he thinks.  Oh, come on!!!  I'd like him to get excited about something once in a while when I ask for his opinion...even if it's a "Take that thing off, you look like a cow!"  (OK, maybe not quite that strong, but you get my point).  I'd rather  have honesty, even if it's not flattering...I wouldn't ask if I didn't want an opinion!

the best way to tell some one something bad, is to not say anything or you can compliment them & then nicely reason to them whats wrong with pherhaps what a person is wearing

Quick tip for guys . . .

On this comment:

"Well, Patty... you look great for 45."

Drop the "for 45" part. That's the kind of detail information that gets you into trouble. Women will miss the "you look great" part and think on the age part added. Then, your evening will be wrecked.

(-: I know a guy who has great taste in scents would have a smooth way to get around that one.

I generally fall back on throwing myself to the ground and fake a seizure.  Works all the time.  But, be careful, without practice you can hurt your shoulder.

I expect the truth! If I look bad in something, I need to know! If my friend looks bad in something and asks me, I know that she really does want to know. We have the hormone rule - if we preceed any question with "I'm so hormonal," the answer is always "you look great!" So hormones are our trump card!

If I ask my husband will be BRUTALLY HONEST! Which is one of the reasons I married him. So if I wear a shirt i'm not sure about unless I want a brutally honest answer I won't ask! He'll actually tell me to change it if I ask if it's something that doesn't look good on me. He's diplomatic though, not rude! So we go by the old addage"Don't Ask Don't Tell"

It depends.  If she's running on time, I'll tell her the truth, if she's running late, I'll fib.  I guarantee you, I've lied a lot more than I've told the truth.
