People may initially like Klonopin when it helps them sleep better & offers some relief from anxiety. HOWEVER - Klonopin IS NOT MEANT FOR LONG-TERM USE. It is highly addictive even for those who do have a history of substance abuse problems. When you read the reviews that say, "Ooooh, I feel better now" & "Really makes things nice," you see the "allure" is very deceiving. It doesn't take long to develop a physical tolerance & need your dosage increased. Others will notice a change in your personality, cognitive abilities, memory problems, etc. - but you don't notice because you're too out of it to realize it. Klonopin causes terrible memory problems, impaired thinking, changes in your overall personality, serious depression & bizarre behavior. If your doctor considers this med for you, you owe it to yourself, your loved ones & friends to fully research the side effects; even ones the FDA considers "rare" - & weigh ALL negatives against the benefits your doctor think it will provide. My doctor even told me, "Stay off the internet & don't read all the negative things people say; problems are rare." He was WRONG. Drug companies schmooze up to doctors & fool them into thinking that only a small percentage of people have adverse reactions to THEIR company's meds.
Not only should Klonopin not be used any longer than a couple of weeks intermittently, it is also CRITICAL to understand that under no circumstances should Klonopin be stopped cold turkey. If your doctor fails to tell you this, he should. Do not abruptly discontinue; TAPER off - or the withdrawals will sentence you to a veritable living hell. Among the array of bizarre, debilitating symptoms, there is facial numbness, severe memory loss, ataxia, seizures, severe depression, muscle spasms (sometimes clonic spasms/seizures requiring emergency medical treatment), the feeling of "bone rubbing against bone," extreme cognitive impairment & a host of other nasty, frightening problems. Even if you have taken Klonopin even for just a short time, this can happen.
