I've experienced severe anxiety since a very young age - my parents sent me to a few different psychologists as a child and again as a teenager, but they never seemed to have the ability to "cure" my nonstop anxiety. As I became an adult, the anxiety worsened and literally took over my life. I worried about everything all day and couldn't stop no matter what I tried. My anxiety had a mind of its own.
I eventually decided to see a psychiatrist who naturally diagnosed me with GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder). He originally prescribed Xanax, which I was on for about 5 years. It seemed to work well, but I gained a tolerance to it far too quickly and it became ineffective far sooner than I had hoped. I wasn't aware of other options at the time, so I continued to take it, mainly because it was a mental habit by that time.
After a few years, I finally mentioned to my doctor that it was pretty much worthless to continue prescribing it as it wasn't working anyway, and he asked me if I would be willing to switch to another medication (Klonopin) that was in the same class as Xanax (benzodiazepines). Of course I took the offer (anything to rid myself of my overbearing, life-intrusive anxiety).
I was prescribed Klonopin and have now been taking it for about 3 1/2 years. I immediately noticed a positive difference compared to the Xanax. It didn't make me nearly as groggy or tired (there were times I actually blacked out on Xanax due to the lethargy and fatigue it caused). The Klonopin has never made me overly tired - I am able to function as a normal person, my anxiety has lessened greatly, and even after 3+ years, I am still taking the same dose as I originally started with and have not noticed a lowered tolerance.
As a side note, I had also tried numerous other "anti-anxiety" medications, such as Trazadone, Buspar, and Paxil, and I will readily say that Klonopin has by far been the most life-changing, mentally freeing, and effective anti-anxiety medication I have ever been prescribed.
I would not recommend this medication to anyone who has a high potential to abuse prescription medications or any other drugs as it can be highly addictive. For anyone who does not pose this risk, I would highly recommend Klonopin to treat anxiety over any of the other anti-anxiety medications I have tried.
