Well, I wish I had read the reviews here before I took the plunge and got my gold membership. I had a long and happy relationship with Classmates.com - a good 10yrs - until I gave them my money.
The good and the free: I saw names of classmates. It was nice to know they were still around. Depending on how much interest the site wanted to generate, I could read summaries of their lives since school, or college or the military, and for a while I could see pictures. I still go to the site to see if anyone has joined or changed a name - whatever. Latest incentive is an option to send a note, even if you are not "GOLD". The site lets you know that the message will be public - available for all to read. I sent a couple that have gone unanswered. I should have let that be enough.
The bad: Some of the interest lists are so totally dorkey. There's a lot of room for messages and reunions, but can you really see everyone planning a reunion for the whole world to see? Yes, use the lists for reunions - that has been done in my affiliation list twice now - but planning it on-line as suggested is just too much. And have I reconnected with lost friends??????? No. I see their names, and now I may see more of their notes (if any) and photos (if available). Other than that, there has not been the mad rush to rekindle old friendships as promoted.
The ugly and money gone: It is still "only" $30/yr to go GOLD, but what did I really get? I finally decided to give it a try. Everyone who has looked at my profile and forgotten to turn off their "let them know you were here" option are total strangers! As my grandma used to say, "My delicates are hung and drying on the front porch for everyone to see." So far, I haven't gotten any wierd e-mails. The two reunions that used the lists had their own private websites where we gathered for planning purposes. I don't think my money is working for me. Thank goodness they do have the option to [1] opt out early and [2] do not automatically renew.
Would I recommend Classmates.com? Sure. Why not. But I would only recommend it under the "free" and not the "Gold" option. I just don't like wasting my money.
