Sinus problems have bothered me for as long as I can remember and it is not uncommon for me to completely lose my sense of smell and taste when my problems reach a peak. There is no cure for such conditions, but there are many over the counter drugs one can take to make the problems more bearable. One product that I have used and liked is Claritin D Allergy and Congestion Tablets, a drug for coping with allergic problems and sinus conditions.
Drug Commentary:
Claritin D is one of several different sinus medications that I use during the cooler time of the year when sinus problems become an issue. My problems are triggered by cold weather and it is common for me to go a full day at a time (or longer) during the coldest time of the year without the use of my senses of smell or taste.
Fortunately, there are plenty of effective drugs to help deal with this problem and Claritin D is one of them. This product offers the advantage of prescription strength without having to get a doctor's prescription. As many people already know, Claritin was once a prescription only product and I can remember people talking about it and pointing out how effective it was for relief of allergies and other conditions. Today, this product is sold over the counter for a relatively low price compared to its earlier days. It helps to eliminate or control problems like sinus congestion, itchy eyes and throat, sneezing, and other symptoms brought on by sinus problems and allergies.
My experience with Claritin D has been positive and I can often tell a difference just a short time after taking a pill. Within the first hour, my sinuses will slowly open up and the pressure will gradually disappear. It won't necessarily go away completely, but I can certainly tell a difference. Often, it is just enough relief that I can regain the ability to breathe through my nose and resume life as normal. The relief will usually last one full day and beyond.
Many allergy/sinus products have the clear disadvantage of causing drowsiness but not Claritin D. In fact, some people claim that Claritin D has the opposite effect: That it causes insomnia instead of sleepiness. I have not experienced this problem but I admit that I tend to take this product in the morning- when I don't want to fall asleep- so I can't really say whether or not it does cause insomnia. I think I will continue to play it safe and take the pills as far away from bedtime as possible. Other than this possibility, I have not noticed any other side effects.
Bottom Line:
Claritin D costs more than most other allergy medicines, often selling for anywhere from 80 cents to $1.30 per pill. The large pills are sometimes tough to swallow but they are affective at opening up sinus passages and eliminating the annoyances caused by allergies. I alternate these tablets with Benydryl and other over the counter drugs in order to save a little money and take advantage of the relief that each has to offer. But high price or not, Claritin D is a good product for the relief it provides and I think the cost is justified.
