Chlorophytum Chlorophytum comosum —

I've always enjoyed nature and products of nature. Having a few green plants in my office makes the time spent there more enjoyable and also makes the office look a little greener! My oldest plant is the big granddaddy Chlorophytum comosum or Spider plant as you may know it. It's huge and has been in my office for almost 20 years now.

Chlorophytum comosum is the scientific name for this plant. It is commonly known as a Spider plant. It has thin green leaves with white or cream stripes and sprouts off shoots that can be up to 24 inches long. At the bottom of the shoots is where you will find the "baby plant" which will grow into a full size Spider plant. You can leave the babies hanging for decoration or propogate them to make new Spider plants.

To propogate a "baby" plant, just snip it off and either plant it immediatey in a small pot and water it or stick it in a container or glass with water. Either way, the plant will root and you will have another start to a Spider plant.

Spider plants are great choices for sitting on top of a tall piece of furniture or to put in hanging baskets. They look very nice on porches in hanging baskets. You can also use these for ground cover if you prefer. Just we warned that they grow fast and reproduce quickly.

Chlorophytum comosum are easy to care for plants. Basically all they require is some sunlight and some water. They are very hard to kill and unless you forget to water them for a month (maybe two), they will still be growing. The leaves do lose color when you wait a long time to water them, but sometimes we do forget routine waterings!

One of the things, other than the beauty of having a living plant in my office, is that Spider plants help to clean the air by filtering it and promoting a clean air environment.

If you are looking for a low maintenance house plant, I highly recommend this long leafed and pretty Spider plant.

We almost got one of these. I was concerned our apartment wouldn't have enough sunlight in fall and winter. Nice review.

These are really nice plants. I used to have several but the cats played too much with them and I had to ditch the greenery. :(

I love these plants! We used to have them all over my office where I used to work. They looked so nice and didn't require much maintenance.

I think one of these would look terrific on the top of a bookcase in my husband's office. I just don't think it would get enough sun. I guess it wouldn't to try...

LOL! I can relate on the coffee. I have finally gotten the hang of it though and now make a pretty decent cup of coffee :)

I think I've supplied everyone on the third and first floors of our building with plants now.

I have a wonderful one that has babies. I haven't always had luck with babies but this one sits in the sun and for my guy it's a good place:)

I kill everything green in my house, even the fake plants. When I worked in an office I told them, I will do whatever you ask, but water the plants and make coffee (trust me you don't want to know!)
