Looking for a pet that is better than a fish, but less responsibility than a dog? Look no further, a chinchilla is here to save the day! Well, maybe not save the day, but certainly make your day. When I first found out one of my close friends was getting rid of a chinchilla I was skeptical, I'd heard... read full review »

I own a Chinchilla and he is the most adorable thing on earth. He is so soft and cute.

Chinchillas are not hard to care for. It is no more than owning a cat or dog. Because of the thick, soft fur, chinchillas do not attract pests such as fleas and ticks. Insects will suffocate, so there is a bonus.

Their diet mainly contains berries and nuts and lots of Timothy Hay. They do have a sensitive stomach, therefore you have to be careful of what you feed it. You can buy chinchilla food at pet stores such as PetsMart and Petco. You can even buy some hamster foods that contains nuts and berries for chinchillas....

Chinchillas can be great pets, as long as you understand them! Though they look cute and cuddly, many are independant and would prefer to run around and on you, than to he held close! As such, they don't make good pets for young children.

Always look for reputable breeders or rescues in your area, before the petstore. If for no other reason than financial! You can often get a pedigreed, healthy pet from a rescue or breeder for $50 versus the $120+ at your local petstore.

One negative is that you cannot often buy a good cage for them from a local pet store. They can chew through plastic, so be wary...

I love chinchillas with a passion, but have found them to be a lot of work (as one would expect with exotics). If you are looking for a pet that is more fun than a fish, but less work than a dog, I suggest getting a guinea pig!

Chins can be really messy (poops fly everywhere!) and it is so hard to find healthy products for them in stores. I end up buying most of my stuff from fancier pet stores or online. Also, many people seem to be allergic to the dust they bathe in. But keep in mind they need dust (not sand) to properly clean their fur.

I have found out the hard way that the temperature rule...

I had a friend who was trying to get rid of her 2 Chins and we decided to take them in. They were so cute and sweet but I found them to be a lot of work! The cage had to be cleaned every day and they had a 4 story cage. They would pick through their food and throw around the pieces that they didn't like and the food is expensive for a little bag. They feel so soft but their hair gets all over everything, they shed worse than cats! I made sure to not put mine near the wall because they had chewed through my friends wall paper and wall. I even woke up one morning to find that one of them had chewed... read full review »

Not knowing too much about these adorable creatures at the outset, I have to say that I'm thrilled to have such a cute, low-maintenance and fun pet!  "Dusty" the Chinchilla has a real personality and is a happy and interesting member of the family. He loves Cheerio treats and watching him use his little paws to eat is so cute! He loves being stroked under the chin and behind his ears and snuggles into the crook of my arm when we take him out of his condo to play.  He's very active - kind of a cross between an rabbit and a squirrel - and he loves to run around like crazy at night.  He also loves...

i had a chinchilla he was great they have very fine fur that gets on your face if you touch your nose after handling so wash your hands i wouldnt recommend one for anyone that doesnt like dust as thats what they bath in water even a little will kill them i let mine run around all the time but be careful of electric cords because they constantly chew because their teeth always grow and can cause them problems without a chew block if you get a friendly one you can handle them but they like to come to you oh and they are very fast and hard to catch if they get loose

chinchillas are GREAT pets. they dont smell, they are very easy to take care of. they are funny!!

Chinchillas are smarter than some cats! they can be trained to use a litter box.

they CANNOT get wet!! or they WILL DIE!!!

ive raised chins for over 10 years and they are awesome animals. some DO like to cuddle, some dont. ALL love to run and jump!! so you need a large cage for them and you need to have a designated area (like a hallway) for them to exercise everyday!
